Learn to spell, people
« on: June 04, 2008, 11:31:03 PM »
Ok, I'm sick and tired of people making glaring spelling mistakes. Now, we all make mistakes every now and then, but that's no big deal. I wanted to point out the obvious things that people misspell and hopefully it will bring an end to the madness.

The word "then" is used as in "I went to the store, and then I went home."
The word "than" is used as in "I would rather go to the store than go home." or "I bought more than 10 items using GCO."

The word "there" is used as in "I went over there to see the sights."
The word "their" is used as in "I used their bathroom and it was clean."
The word "they're" is used as in "Those Jews, they're really nice people."

The word "right" is used as in "It's on the right side."
The word "write" is used as in "I will write a post about it when I get home."

The word "your" is used as in "I see your point." or "I read your post."
The word "you're" is used as in "I see what you're saying." or "You're so wrong about that."

Corporate, Automatically, Personally, Didn't, Should've, Would've, Could've, Don't, A Lot, Won't, Aren't

If anyone has any other words that are commonly misused or misspelled, please post for everyone's benefit.

I will bet that you used spell check about 100 times, so that no one can say "look, you made a mistake". LOL

I think you should write your own book on spelling and grammar.

LOL, you can't teach the internet English, man.

It'd be nice, especially here because of the depressingly poor secular education most bochurim get...

I beg to differ. With internet so readily available to most people nowadays, it isn't very hard to learn some English. It's just that people choose not too.

I think it takes a lot of talent to make spelling mistakes using Firefox.
-of course that's assuming you know the difference between there, their and they're...

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with everyone. Jeez, so some people cannot spell. What does that have to do with dansdeals. If it is really bad then that's one thing, but if it's a simple grammatical error, relax people.

What you are talking about here are not spelling mistakes, these are grammatical errors.

I wont point fingers here, but I believe that many members of this forum may not have had the English language education and therefore have not mastered the English language enough to be able to decipher the grammatical differences that you mentioned above.

The easiest way that I have found to spell check is with the Google Toolbar. It has a spell-check button that you can click after you have entered text on a web-page such as this. Another great product from Google.

I agree, these were mostly grammatical errors until the few at the bottom that I posted. I knew someone would come up with something I did wrong! Either way, while these indeed are grammatical errors, they are very blatant errors. If you expect to get anywhere in life you need to know simple grammer. I'm not gonna complain about using the word "gonna", and I'm not gonna complain if the comma after the word gonna above should've been before the quote or after the quote. And I'm not even gonna complain if someone spells the word "becuase" wrong, because I myself have made that mistake and that's what it is...a mistake. But not knowing the difference between "their", "they're", and "there" is just ridiculous.

And true, it's specifically because of the lack of a proper education in the Yeshiva system that causes all this. But I went through the system and I do know how to spell, and I do know proper grammer for the most part.

Oy!

If you read my post above you would see what I had to say about this.

I went through the yeshiva system too, yet I read many books and was online a lot. I love to write (i know, i know) and that helped me with the spelling. English is not that hard, you just got to study it. It is like anything else in life, you've got to learn it, to know it.

For what its worth, I would like to add the following:

People send me resumes for job openings. More often that you would think, there are stupid spelling or grammatical errors on there.

When I see that you cant even take the time to check, and/or have someone else spell check and grammar check your resume, your chance of getting any job is hovering right above not-a-chance-in-he**

I think this thread needs to be revived.

One mistake I continue to see on the forums:

Advice is a noun. It's something you get or give.
Advise is a verb. It is an act. "To advise someone on a situation."

There are plenty more. Maybe we can add them here and each of us can learn something everyday.

I see people here use loose instead of lose all the time here.

The most commonly misspelled English word is separate, btw.

I don't think so. Typos (or grammatical misuse) of the, its, and, if, is etc. are probably more common.

Yesterday, I saw someone use "are" instead of "our". As in-

"Are entire trip got cancelled" or
"All are stuff got ruined!"

That one infuriates me too.

In today's day and age with automatic spellcheck, you almost need to TRY to spell a word incorrectly.

wow, blast from the past here...

I think the error that irks me the most is when people write "could of" or "would of" etc.
It's like nails against the chalkboard every time I see that.
