Rubik's cube help
« on: February 04, 2023, 08:25:09 PM »
I've been working on mastering the 4*4*4 Rubik's cube, and have hit a road block, namely OLL parity.  In this case, 2 edge pieces are flipped in their correct position, and the rest is solved.  PLL parity, where edge pieces are swapped, can be solved intuitively.  There is an algorithm to solve OLL parity, but it is long and involved and I don't want to memorize it.  I'm looking for an intuitive way to fix it, even if it takes longer.

My third grader says he'll buy a 5x5x5 Rubik's cube for me.  ;D  For now, on to the 2x2x2.  I watched a few YouTube videos and found the following to be the most intuitive (least memorization).  If you have a better one, please share.

I may have been bored, solved white and yellow but not the other sides on a 4*4*4.  Ideas for other challenges?

Now try to solve white and yellow so that the squares attached to the white/yellow edges are also solved (ie: green, then orange, then blue, then red, going around the top)
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Perhaps you can discuss this response to an internet stranger about whom you know absolutely nothing, with R' Berkovits, and he can help you see just exactly how inappropriate your response was.

Did that first, this was a next step.

Don't think he meant anything negative. Just was pointing out the coincidence that this subject appeared in this week's edition.

Though I can understand why someone would take it as a criticism of how they spend their time.

My sincerest apologies. I certainly did not mean it negatively in any way.

Finally got my 5-cube (thank you, Son!), and after watching the first minute or so of JPerm's explanation for centers, the rest was pretty intuitive. Not necessary to memorize any more algorithms.

Do 6-cubes add any other challenging aspects?  @etech0 would you know?  What's the largest size you have?

I never had bigger than 5x5 but I've seen an 8x8 and did it once (it took forever)

I bought for myself a 7*7*7 cube as an early Chanukah present.  Not much harder than a 5-cube, but I was not able to solve the last two centers on my own.  (I solve 5-cube centers without any specific algorithm; perhaps there is one that I should've been able to extrapolate.)  My first "solve" had three unsolved squares in each of two centers.

This is helpful for solving those last two centers:

Since I posted the video on solving the 2-cube, I've put that one to the side and worked on others, as I don't like memorizing algorithms.  Last night, my kid was looking at the instructions for the 2-cube, and then tells me that he knows the easiest way to solve it.  When he showed me, I was amazed we hadn't figured it out sooner.  We had learned to solve the 3-cube with the WIRED video below.  He said since there are no edge pieces, just leave out those steps:  skip steps 1, 2, 4, 5, and 8.  That leaves steps 3, 6, and 7.  (For step 6, one yellow corner is a fish.)
