Delta extra bag for US bound flight
« on: February 07, 2018, 10:36:21 AM »
HI, I recently posted about an experience I had where Delta charged me for an extra bag on a flight back from Israel to the US.

Although the terms of carriage clearly state that you pay for the extra bag and that the cost should be $100, I was actually charged almost $110 dollars.

I am looking to see if anyone else had a similar experience when buying an extra bag for a return flight to the US from any international destination.

If you have paid for an extra bag, please PM to discuss your experience.

Was the charge in foreign currency?

Yes, it was in shekel. How about you?

That's why, guess the Shekel went up before the charge posted.

No, that was not the case, the charge was about 10% more and the shekel does not move that much in a day.

Have you experienced this as well?

No need for the new thread.

Credit cards have different exchange rates then the “market rate” you see online. Also, the time difference thing mentioned. Sometimes it comes out in your favor and sometimes not.

Its not the credit card as when I went on the Delta website it asked me to pay in shekel (388 NIS). I paid the amount requested in shekel which was supposed to correspond to $100 USD.

Later that day I went on Forex and it showed that 388 NIS was worth $110 USD.

My credit card statement showed a charge for $110 USD.

Again, the reason I started the thread is to see if others have had the experience of paying more than the agreed upon price when paying for an extra bag on a US bound flight.

Doubt your going to get different answers, the simple answer is you paid in differently currency.
The x-change rate bounces up and down and almost never going to get that rate.
It's like what happened to me in the past month, I took out 1770 in shekals and looked at the exchange rate to see exactly what I can take out for $500, but of course that wasn't the exact rate, to take out 1770 was really 507.26$
So to answer your question your cc has a horrible conversion rate or the rate was set for that day in the morning and you were checking the rate in the afternoon...ect..

I'm not sure that I want to pin this on my cc just yet. Your example shows that there was a $7 dollar difference on $500 or roughly $1.20 per $100.

Mine was 10x greater fluctuation, if it even is attributable to the cc.

This is why I started the thread and am looking to see if anyone else had an experience where they paid more than the posted USD price when buying an extra suitcase for a return trip to the US.

This is obviously a form of DCC. USD/ILS hasn't been anywhere near $1 : 3.88ILS for quite some time.

They probably charged an extra conversion rate to make the charge in Shekels, so it’s $100+3% conversion, then do it backwards $103(in Shekels) convert back to dollars, make it 7% now, if the currency moved another 3% then you got to $110

What is DCC?

Dynamic currency conversion, if you've ever been abroad and noticed that the store tries to convince you to pay in dollars at a poor rate - it's that. You're supposed to have the option to decline and pay in the local currency, otherwise you can dispute the extra markup with your CC issuer.

I dont think that was the problem. I was sitting at my desk in NY and when I checked my teenage daughter in for the return flight from TLV to JFK, I indicated that there was an extra bag. Delta said the cost was 388 NIS. This was not the payment screen where i had to enter a credit card. I then went through the rest of the check in process and at the end it asked for my cc to pay the 388.

I made the payment and about 1/2 an hour later went on my cc and saw that the charge was $112. I then went on Forex and punched in 388 NIS and it came back as $112 USD, which means that CSR was giving the best rate possible for converting 388 NIS to USD.

I think its a Delta problem and that's why I am looking to see if there are others with the same experience.
