Help w/ award ticket/baggage fees/united/hawaii
« on: February 07, 2018, 03:24:24 PM »
Hi. I am realizing there is likely more knowledge here than with the different CSRs I have spent over an hour on the phone...

I booked a multi city award ticket on united roundtrip mainland/Hawaii that included one inter island flight in the middle (zero extra miles!)

I paid the taxes with my United explorer card

My itinerary however shows that I will be charged $25 for th first bag on every leg of the flight

I have received conflicting information that I will have to only pay for luggage on the interisland  flight
Which is on Hawaiian air

Is this true? Even though I booked through united? The entire trip is one united itinerary. I wasn't even aware I wasn't on united flights until baggage issue came up.

Also part of my return on united to the mainland is booked on Hawaii air to Honolulu and then connecting united to mainland.

Conflicting information on whether I should have to pay luggage on this segment

I am also being told that outbound flight is free regardless that itinerary says $25

Is that possibly true?

I believe all luggage should be 0 on the itinerary for my 1st bag

Please help

How long is the stopover?

You'd only need to pay 1x per "leg" but if you have a multi-day stopover, that would count twice, whereas if the stopvoer were just a short period of time to connect, you could have UA tag your bags to final destination and you only pay 1x.

Our return flight from the mainland is from Kauai to Honolulu with a two over layover /connection for the trans pacific flight to Chicago. My itinerary I booked on united was Kauai to Chicago.  I never even noticed the first leg was Hawaiian air.

Inter-island flights on Hawaiian Air charge baggage fees even if on United ticket. It can be reduced if you join Hawaiian Frequent Flyer program and add that to your inter-island reservation.

Bags should be tagged to final destination if everything is on the same booking, and the bag fee goes in accordance with the Most Significant Carrier (MSC).
