America sucks at the Olympics and there's no whitewashing that. As you mentioned yourself - we are good at snowboarding and nothing else. While tiny Norway is far ahead of us. No excuses.

Out of the 90+ countries competing we're in the top 10 so far and will probably end up there when it's all over in terms of medals awarded.

And it looks like we finished 4th in terms of medal count in 2014.

America sucks at the Olympics? That's news to me. The have as many summer medals as the next 3 countries combined, and they have more winter medals than anyone other than Norway. In fact, the last time Norway had more medals than the US in a winter olympics was 1998. The winter games were founded on various types of skiing, and that's where Norway excels. They built up a big lead in the first several winter games when it was basically all skiing, and they keep the pace more or less by staying dominant in those disciplines.

I meant in this olympics the US is underperforming, not in general.

We finished in the top 4 the last 4 Olympics with metal counts of 28, 37, 25 and 34. The 37 metal count was 7 more than any other nation. If @yuneeq thinks that sucks then where do I signup? Also I didn't know there was that many snowboarding events unless we won medals in other events.  :)

Top 10 is a low standard for a country that historically excels and probably spends the most money developing athletes. US should be top 3 every time.

Guess we're 'only' top 4.  I still wouldn't call that 'sucking'.

We’re 5th and are way behind Netherlands and Norway. Meh.

That shows how little you know about the Olympics. Do you have any clue what events haven't even started to hand out medals yet?

I know we have no downhill, figure skating and hockey results just to name a few. All medal or multiple medal possibilities. Do I know for sure if any of them are going to pull off what S White just did on his last run, no. Your comment even if it was meant only for this Olympics was out of line and wrong.

Throw freestyle skiing in there - only 2 of 10 events have been contested thus far. US pulled in 4 golds, 2 silvers, and 2 bronzes in the 2017 world championships.

I was watching the games with my wife last night and she told me how this is rooted in Avoda Zara- Low and behold she is right...
oh dear god. rooted? because they had athletic competitions every 4 years so therefore no one can do it? give me a break.

yeshivish people were fedora style hats. It started in the early 20th century when EVERYONE wore them in the west. So is that bad? are yeshivish people just imitating the non jews and it should be avoided?

So I think I've gotten over the fact that you didn't seem to know the Olympics originated in ancient Greece. On to the more pressing question. Do you somehow think that the connection to ancient Greece somehow creates a halachic (or even hashkafic) problem for someone who wants to watch the winter games?

No One knows something until they learn or relearn it

Second. I watch the games myself and it is without a question that it is bitul torah and thus being an avirah on its own right.( It just so happens that Chazal equate bitul torah to avodah zara... )

And yes if something is rooted in Avoda Zara I would specifically try hard to avoid it. A example of this is valentines day. It is rooted in avoda zara and because of that I will specifically not take part in any way.

At the same time I am not saying that wishing someone hppy V day is avoda zara...

I think that's an overly broad application. What was taken from the ancient Greeks was at most the concept of athletic competition. You have thousands of years between the last actual Greek 'olypmics' and when it was revived 100+ years ago. Not to mention the fact that there were no winter olympics in Greece. The closest parallel within the current olympics would be track and field in the summer olympics.
