You realize that no NHL players are participating, right?

Of course I do.
However there is former NHL players and there's much more talent in the USA (even without the NHL) than there is in Slovenia.

ETA: Take a look at all the talent that ever made it to the NHL from Slovenia - http://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/nationality/slovenian-nhl-players-career-stats.html

I know some of them. No big names. Still the talent level is a much higher.
Who would you pick to win? And give up a 2-0 lead?

(Opening odds to win Gold)
USA +900
Slovenia +25000

ETA: The USA is -950 on the money line in its game against Slovenia

Have no idea about Slovenia. US men's is not expected to do anything. They just lost three games in some Cup a couple months ago. Total score was like 13-4. Are you allowed to watch the women? US/CA is on now live.

Brian Gionta!!!!

Seriously though, the big knock on the construction of this roster is actually that there are too many NHL washouts currently playing in the AHL or KHL, and not enough young guys still in college (a la Miracle on Ice).

This British sounding guy that's announced several of the snowboard events is just terrible. He was the secondary announcer for the halfpipe events, and was basically just asking the main announcer questions. Now he's on snowcross on his own and doesn't seem to know what's flying.

I can't get over all the flailing arms on the big jumps. Even the best riders with the cleanest runs seem to flail a ton.

I will say though that it seems to have way more luck than the rest of the snowboard disciplines. Even the gold medal winner Vaultier, who was also the most recent world champ, and overall seemed to be the most in control of all his races, was essentially lucky to get through to the final (the back 4 wiped out, and he was the only one of them to really recover, allowing him to nab the final spot).

Wow. I was gonna say that can't be, because he finished the race. But apparently he finished the race with the fracture. It was easily the worst looking crash, but at least 2 others were actually carted off

The Australian that finished the 'small final' did so with some sort of taped up lower arm/hand injury. Not sure why he bothered, given that it was the consolation bracket and he couldn't push off at the start at all.

Yep, was great to watch. Couldn't believe he still made it through. Had he not, we would have had gold. I also assume the flailing is to help with balance.

I don't get the purpose of the small final... it's just to get final standings for top 10. But I guess for those in the Olympics, they want to be there and get a ranking.

No One knows something until they learn or relearn it

Second. I watch the games myself and it is without a question that it is bitul torah and thus being an avirah on its own right.( It just so happens that Chazal equate bitul torah to avodah zara... )

And yes if something is rooted in Avoda Zara I would specifically try hard to avoid it. A example of this is valentines day. It is rooted in avoda zara and because of that I will specifically not take part in any way.

At the same time I am not saying that wishing someone hppy V day is avoda zara...
Really? If your so concerned with bitty Torah, what in the world are you doing on ddf?
I wasn't angry, I was just amazed at the contortions you are pulling to make watching the Olympics into a bad thing. Into an aveirah. But sky guy succinctly nailed all my points.

Why are you pointing out my flaws in determining whether something is correct.

Bitul Torah is an Aviera just as any. Pointing out my imperfections wont change that.

You should tell your shank on the seder plate that it has no meaning because it is only a zeicher... If the olympics is a zeicher to the original games in greece where they used it as avoda zara is something to examine.

It says Timche et Zeicher ...after all:)

maybe also worth mentioning there is a mitzva to destroy avora zara...

Chazal say H' forgives O"Z but not B"T - so maybe you should prefer it to closer to O"Z

Why don't the halfpipers do the big air runs? It seems like the tricks being performed in the big air are nothing compared to 1 trick in the halfpipe.

I saw an interview with Shaun White regarding his (relatively) poor showing in Sochi.
He says it's because he practiced for slopestyle in addition to half pipe. So even though these events look similar they obviously require different practiced skills. Some obvious differences - the speed, the air time, jump height, the angle of the launch ramp, and the angle of landing. Come to think of it, I'm not sure what is the same.

The overlap is actually slopestyle and big air. US has 4 men and 4 women competing in both.

Makes a lot more sense, as the last jump in slopestyle is very similar to big air.
