Cat 5e/6/6a Which wire should I use?
« on: February 12, 2018, 02:26:22 AM »
I want to run network cables myself without having to pay for a network guy to run the cables, (I'm on a budget that doesn't allow to spend hundreds for these stuff).

As I checked out the subject I saw that today's standard is 5e, but I'm thinking why shouldn't I use 6/6a cables, & make it somewhat more future-proof for not such a big price difference?

My question is: am I correct & use 6a?
If yes, most normal priced 6 cables I saw were plain 6, where can I get 6a for a good price? If I can't get 6a at a decent price should I rather use cat 5e then cat 6?

I'm going to use the cable for data transmission, & for ip cameras.

TIA

Cat6 is just fine for cameras and everything basic.

if it's just running the cables all you need is an electrician which is always cheaper than a network guy

Many electricians won't touch low voltage. Don't know why

Just pulling cable is not a big deal, maybe they wont crimp the ends or punch down. Another idea if your looking for a cable puller is walk up to any Verizon, Dish or  Spectrum van and ask the tech onsite if he's looking for extra work outside of his work  schedule.

What do you mean "is just fine"? If cat5e is very good for this stuff cat6 is definitely better. Am I mistaken? What about 6a?

You don't need more than cat5e unless you plan on running gigabit speed anytime soon.

If your doing yourself, more important is you want to make sure you know what your doing with termination. That is more vital then the best wire. Experience is the only way, reading up won't get you what you need. And you will be compromising terribly on data quality. As well as not having proper tools, and network testing equipment.

I read it as OP wants to run the wire himself and then call the "network guy" to make the connections...

Actually I was thinking on doing everything myself, & buy a good crimping tool (maybe Pass-Thru)

Thanks guys for the heads up

Really easy to use. Just might take a few tries to get it right. Leave an extra foot of wire on either end in case you mess up and need to chop the piece and start over.

Not sure what you mean by pass-thru.

Are you maybe referring to PoE (Power over Ethernet) or Crossover?
