Is it possible to check bags through using 2 tickets?

Is it possible to buy 2 one-way tickets on United (TLV-EWR and then EWR-TPA) and check the bags through on the same airline?  On the long haul leg I would be traveling biz/first but coach on the 2nd leg.  Is there a downside to this approach?  My goal would be to use fewer miles.

Yes there is a huge potential downside. if something happens to your first flight, which then causes you to miss your second flight, you could be screwed.

Landing in the US, you have to collect baggage either way. even on the same ticket.

Given your observation, what is my downside/risk if I buy 2 individual tickets?

If your first flight gets delayed and you miss your 2nd, the airline is under no obligation to book you on another flight.
