AC Aeroplan changes coming in 2020 - how bad will it be?
« on: May 13, 2018, 12:16:03 PM »
As I logged into Aeroplan.ca today, an ad for changes coming flashed on the screen, I decided to click and see what's in store, and while details are scant, I doubt whether it will be overall favorable.

I can't imagine Aeroplan will have anything of value to offer. Question is what Air Canada will bring.

Losing infant on award will be a tough one.

Undoubtedly you should use your Aeroplan rewards before AC drops Aeroplan. As pointed out above, the real question is what will the AC program look like. They have sworn up and down it will be competitive and there will be lots of start up rewards to get people started. We will see

I guess this is what I missed:

Quote
The Aeroplan program will continue to exist, but it won’t have access to the type of award flights that it enjoys now as Air Canada’s mileage program. It is nice that we’re getting a 3 years heads-up for that purpose.

So this is about Aeroplan as it will exist after AC created a mileage program with a DIFFERENT NAME.

Hey, for all we know the new Aeroplan might be as valuable as Plenti.

Living in Canada, and watching the way WestJet is evolving, I wouldn't be shocked if Aeroplan hooked up with WestJet, and if WestJet joined skyteam.

XXXXX XXXXXXXXX,

Last year we announced plans to launch our own, new loyalty program in June 2020. This new program will replace our participation in the Aeroplan® Program, which is separately owned and operated by Aimia. Since then, we’ve spent the past year listening to more than 30,000 customers and employees across Canada and the United States. We heard that you want a better, more flexible loyalty program, and we will deliver that in 2020.

I’m reaching out to let you know about a proposal to acquire the Aeroplan Program from Aimia. This proposal is being jointly supported by Air Canada, TD Bank, CIBC and Visa Canada.

Straight to the point: we heard from many customers who were excited about our plans, and would prefer to transfer their Aeroplan Miles to the new Air Canada loyalty program. This is what this proposed deal allows us to do – if successful, all Aeroplan Miles would transfer into the new Air Canada loyalty program in 2020.

Aimia is an independent company and it’s ultimately their decision to accept or reject the proposal. However, no matter the outcome, we’re committed to listening to our customers and building the best travel rewards program for Canada.

We’ll continue to keep you updated, and in the meantime, you can learn more at aircanada.com/loyalty and ask us your questions.

Thank you for your continued business and for your help in building the best loyalty program in Canada.

Sincerely,

And air Canada is back...

ELAL management and board should read and reread this until they can recite it in their sleep. They need to understand that a well managed loyalty program is an income producing asset, rather than a cost of doing business, which is why AC raised their offer to buy Aeroplan.

On July 25, we wrote to let you know about a joint proposal by Air Canada, TD Bank, CIBC and Visa Canada to acquire the Aeroplan® loyalty business from Aimia, the independent company which owns and operates Aeroplan.

Today, we are pleased to announce that the partners have reached an agreement in principle with Aimia. It is still subject to certain conditions, including Air Canada, TD Bank and CIBC establishing a long-term credit card partnership.

If successfully completed, as expected in fall 2018, it would safeguard Aeroplan Members’ miles, permit you to earn and redeem with confidence and allow for a smooth transition to Air Canada’s new loyalty program launching in 2020.

We’ll continue to keep you updated on progress. In the meantime, you can learn more at aircanada.com/loyalty.

Thank you for your continued business.

Sincerely,

Aeroplan ending status qualification in Jan 2020. Emails went out to status holders today.

As we plan for the launch of a more rewarding Aeroplan in 2020, we're reimagining how we can best recognize our most loyal Aeroplan members. In preparation for this, over the course of next year, we'll be winding down the Aeroplan status program. Beginning January 2020, you will no longer be able to qualify for Aeroplan status.

They have said for a while they will be consolidating elite status to a single program. Was always very confusing to have altitude status and Aeroplan status as two separate things

Will it change the value?
