This has been out for a while, but people are still asking elites to check for availability on certain flight and it's worth noting that everyone can now check that.

Just search for a paid flight on CO.com and at the end of the line where it says:
Flight: CO1161
Aircraft: Boeing 737-800
Fare Class: Economy (B)
Meal: None
See On-Time Performance
View Seats

Just click on "Fare Class" to display how may seats are left in every fare class. If it says O2 then there are 2 seats that can be booked by Plat Elites in First/Business with SaverPass rates for example.

Continental Award and Upgrade Classes:
• First/Business - EasyPass Award (ZN)
• First/Business - EasyPass Award for Elites (FN)
• First/Business - SaverPass Award and Alliance Upgrades (I)
• First/Business - SaverPass Award for Plat Elites (O)
• First/Business - Upgrade from B Class for Elite and from M Class for Plat Elites (ZE)
• First/Business - Upgrade from Y Class (FE)
• First/Business - Upgrade using Miles/SWU/Vouchers (R)
• Coach - EasyPass Award (HN)
• Coach - EasyPass Award for Elites (YN)
• Coach - SaverPass Award (X)
• Coach - SaverPass Award for Elites (XN)

Just figured this out:
With KVS you can search Award/Upgrades, Method- ITA: Awards-Upgrades/CO and the CO buckets show. Then just use the filter option.

Much easier IMO

SaverPass rewards have limited availability and are subject to capacity controls.
EasyPass rewards offer expanded availability, costs more miles and is almost always available.

A Continental card gives you the ability to book some elite inventory.

They are willing to sell 4 more coach seats on that flight. There may not even be any seats left as they're often willing to oversell by a certain amount determined by algorithm.

so i guess waiting for award tickets to open isnt really an option
