We have the original xbox so more familiar/comfy with that controller

Xbox one all the way! Unless your into some indie games that only come on the ps4. He will be very happy with the updates and I find that most big names come out on both platforms.

I think it depends on what kinda games you like. Xbox does have more family friendly games in my opinion. But PS4 has some really great groundbreaking games for adults.
