The only one who will make the determination about checking through the bag is the checkin agent so you can't plan ahead except to try and get a friendly and knowledgeable one.  As far ad booking it, it really is a crapshoot which way to go. But personally I would not book two separate itineraries unless I had a very long stopover to allow for delays and an agent unwilling to check the bags through to the final destination.

Got the callback from UA to rebook my canceled TLV flight...at 5:55am ET.

UA will not confirm to DD whether they will return to TLV next week. No update since 5/8 statement,

"We are canceling our daily Tel Aviv flight through June 5 as we continue to evaluate our next steps. We continue to closely monitor the situation and will make decisions on upcoming flights with a focus on the safety of our customers and crews. "

Risk is you'll end up with a flight via Europe. They will not rebook you on EL AL.
