Starting (No credit score!) with Credit Cards?

Hi all,

I've been browsing these forums recently and learned a lot, thanks for all the info!
I will be moving from Israel to the US with my wife in about 6 months, for studies and work. Since I have no credit history whatsoever, what is the best way to get started (and eventually advance to the more lucrative CC with serious miles benefits)?

Probably I'll have to start with debit cards. Does a co-signer (US resident to US citizen) changes anything here?
Since this move is a major one, I'm looking at big spending in the coming year, before (flight tickets) or after we move in (tons of basic shopping - furniture\clothes\kitchen-stuff etc.). An smart way to utilize this towards miles? Israelis CC are pretty lame on this matter.
