AFAIK there is no secret, basically you are trying to convince them that it's more than one person, it used to be a breeze, they have cracked down. It boils down to how convinced they are that it really is two different people, hence the "if your smart about it".

so i went to one staples at 12, and someone had come in and bought ALL of the $200 vgc. (Cashier confirmed that it was one person at 10am who bought all of them), called another staples near me and the same thing happened there too :/. So upsetting. How often do you think they restock?

called the rebate department, b"h they were able to apply both using the numbers on the bottom of the receipt

Went to a Staples store today, not with the intent of getting the rebate, but rather to maximize the Amex offer.

Since I want to avoid as many $6.95 charges as possible, I asked the cashier if she can take five Visa GC (total 1k) and split it into four $250 separate credit card charges. She says "sure, absolutely, I can do that for you". Long story short, she scans two gift cards and splits the charge into two, one being $250 (which I swiped my card for),  and one being $163. I tell her that I asked her to make it $250 even (i.e. please add more of the gc to the order), she says "oh, sorry I can't do that". I ask her if she can refund the original $250, and she says "sorry I can't do that"... yada yada... manager comes, apologizes but says that it can't be refunded. Since this anyway has the rebate offer, I just paid the $163 and took home two $200 gift cards.

Although I can tell that the employee felt remorseful and was ashamed, it is my humble opinion that she should either have to work extra hours to make up for it, or take a pay cut equal to the amount of monetary loss caused to the customer. I spent $155 today that I did not want to spend. I also think that Staples should NEVER make any kind of deal with a vendor where an item is "unrefundable".

Manager said that they are very wary of money laundering. To quote him, "last year over $7 billion of fraud was committed with these gift cards"
ended up only purchasing 2 x  $200

What they told you is simply untrue. Before you swipe and complete the transaction, it can be voided out altogether. I've done it in staples. The manger didn't want to do that for whatever reason.

I had already swiped the first time for the first $250. Are you certain they can void this?

yea they messed up my transaction so she started over even after she swiped today and got another card to rescan
