I'd recommend calling the hospitals - I'm pretty sure they all have a department that would help you apply for Medicaid, so they'd know the rules, likely better than the people at the Medicaid helpline.

Also (though I deal with Medicaid for seniors, so that's quite different these days), with Emergency Medicaid, it shouldn't even matter if you're a citizen - you can get it even if you're an illegal immigrant.

Any with knowledge of the current under-65 Medicaid (non-DAB) rules want to chime in?

I heard they ask for bank statements- how far back do they need?

And Does Medicaid share the info with other government agencies ?
I am still in first years after marriage and most of my money is from help from family- do I have to be worried about anything ??

When someone is in a facility - hospital, nursing home, etc- they can get emergency medicaid.  For this to be approved, they do a 'look back' at bank statements for 3 years.
When someone from the outside applies for Medicaid, the look back is only one month's bank statement.

This is important when helping elderly parents / grand parents navigate the health care system and they may need a nursing home even temporarily.

Thanks!
So they will only look at my last months bank statements, and 1099 forms?

If she's pregnant she can get Madicare regardless. The problem is, if she isn't a US citizen I think they can deny you entry if they think you are coming to have a baby...
What does it mean that if she's pregnant she can get Medicaid regardless??
Do we still have to qualify for it??

Yes you have to qualify I think its 250% above poverty level for a pregnant woman. Try calling yeled vyalda (718) 686-3700 as they have a medicaid assistance program and literally do everything for you (though depends on what month she is in they may not do it but there are other heimish places that will do it all even in later pregnancy stages but it may cost ~100). Or you can also try going through the NY health insurance market yourself and if you qualify they will put you on medicaid

At least some of that is untrue - in regards to Nursing Home Medicaid, Emergency Medicaid does not cover this AT ALL. And when you do apply for nursing home medicaid, they look back 5 years.

The only exception to this is if you need a stay for less than 29 days. Also, if you have a Medicaid managed care plan, different rules MAY apply, depending on the situation.

In contrast, regular medicaid in a hospital, or in the community looks back one month at most - for under 65 (if you're not disabled or blind), I don't think they look at your assets at all.

I've been involved in nursing home medicaid for several years, so that's one area I'm very familiar with.

Now that Medicaid is fine through the health exchange i think the information is easily shared for all government programs

Hi,

My wife is on Medicaid and United Healthcare Plan... We just had a baby yesterday. Anyone know how the process of applying to a healthcare coverage plan works? We received a medicaid card saying infant xxxxx while she was still pregnant, but that is medicaid not an insurance carrier...

Mazal Tov!

Once the child is born you have to register it with the Medicaid office (either by going down in person or sending someone). Once the child is registered properly you can chose a coverage plan...

Some hospitals register the baby for you. Good sam in monsey does. Find out if the hospital did it for you already

Can anyone recommend an insurance agent in NY?
If it's just for an individual/family (as opposed to an employer/group) Im pretty sure you need to go through the Marketplace.
