But this is all semantics. Just fly premium both ways. Problem solved :)

Trick is to fly empty F cabins and have the flight attendants offer to watch and entertain your kid/s (thank you KE).

Need to get a little luckier for flights that have more than 4 seats.

I'm doing LAX-TLV with 6 kids for Pesach, direct in LY Y. done it before, with less kids, but now the older ones are more helpful. Have problems with both kicking in front and standing up and harassing the people behind us, so when we just did LAX-NYC we did:
X              X

with the two biggest kids in the front and the trouble makers with a parent in back. way there the middle seat was occupied (my kids gave her the aisle) way back it was empty (and somehat wasted on two little kids who were perfectly fine wtih a Y. But it was our best flights with them. The inflight games etc were a huge help.
Now we try to tack on 10 hours.

Lol, seems like we've all gone through the same things and come up with the same solutions :)

Only thing I would add (and I'm sure I'm gonna get hammered from some parents but it has seriously saved my life) would be Benadryl, Melatonin or whatever else your pediatrician says is ok for their age and will make them fall asleep (also helps with the jetlag and getting them to sleep that first night after you arrive)!

Melatonin can be a lifesaver

a note of extreme caution first. you must test it first a few times as it can have an opposite effect and then you have a kid bouncing off the wall for 10 hours
dont use it first time on the plane ...

Yeah, I should have mentioned that, although I've never had that problem, my friends said that happened when they gave their kid Benadryl.

the one time we tried Benadryl it got the kid exhausted but not asleep. So it was a couple of hours with an extremely aggravated, kicking and screaming 3 year old.

I have the same issue. It will get my kid tired but he won't sleep unless he is in familiar surroundings (in a crib or strapped in a stroller with zero visibility of parents) so he will just be extra cranky

When I tried that the kid fell asleep immediately, slept for 2 hours & was wide awake the rest of the flight (all night).

Seems like the poll has a clear answer - we've got twins so everything is double the intensity.

We flew with them first at 6 months and they were pretty perfect (LH F with the entire back half of the 747-400 helped :)).

Have flown lots of domestic Y recently anywhere from 2-7 hours, and as long as we can get at least 3 seats together it hasn't been bad - best though is getting a full row, but definitely harder at 1 year plus now that they just want to be out of their seats and walk around

Obviously a little extra room is better so I at least suffer in comfort, but my kid doesn't care about extra legroom or lie-flat, all he wants to do is have a meet and greet with all the passengers. And play footsies with the kid-hating grumpy granny 3 rows over
