In my mind, the difference between an official house and an unofficial one is that when an official house offers meals for pay, you feel like you're supporting their outreach (and yes, part of that is a salary for the sheliach). When an unofficial house (or random frum guy) offers meals for pay, you feel like you're just giving someone money.

You're paying for a product you want, that you probably don't have another source for.
Are you paying him more than you'd pay for takeout at home?  Maybe. But you're not at home.

Inspiring to talk to these selfless and amazing people who travel to make a seder for a handful of people a couple hours away from the nearest Chabad house.

Sadly I only now read through all these posts. Does that mean that the Philippine Chabad is not trustworthy to eat at? I have seen many heimish mashgichim eating there and now I am wondering if people just dont know.

If they can’t be trusted to make good Kashrus decisions themselves, should they be trusted by their employers?
