Trying to understand the point of such a protest in Manhattan or rather how you can explain to New Yorkers the meaning of such a protest. If Ch'vs there was a reason for a draft or call up in the USA as in WW2, I don't think yeshivah guys would get a pass. Of course I believe that in Israel they should leave the yeshiva guys alone, but how to you explain to New Yorkers in Manhattan the reason for the protest? Won't they simply say, that since Israel is constantly on alert with their neighbors, that everyone needs to be drafted? During WW2, did college guys get off the hook?
In NY, they can explain that the law is aimed specifically at religious men to criminalize their studies It is not about the needs of the army as the army does not want Charedim. Also, any "non-charedi" who does not enlist in the army is not subject to parallel laws.
Also in the wars fought by America, Yeshiva students, and all divinity students, were exempt from the draft. It is universally accepted.
Some DL "rabbi" was on the media last night quoting the Rambam and explaining why he did not go to the Atzeres Tefila. He agreed that if someone wants to dedicate his life to learning, he is patur from the army, as was in the wars in our history, but that is only for shevet Levi. This "rabbi" did not know that the Rambam also writes "lo Shevet Levi bilvad" I think every 12 year old frum bachur knows that Rambam.
