Upgrading TLV-EWR on UA
« on: January 16, 2013, 07:36:33 AM »
I feel like a fish out of water asking what could be such a n00bish question, but I've never done this before....  :-[

My friend and his wife are flying TLV-EWR on UA, in W class. I seem to recall hearing from someone that people sometimes sell "upgrades" for a few hundred bucks, on FT or craigslist or whatever. I have no idea how this works (GPU? RPU? Something else?)

Questions:

1) What is the official name for this upgrade? Does it work for TLV-EWR?
2) If yes, will it work for W class? And if W class is not good enough, is there a "co-pay" option like there is when upgrading with miles, and how much money?
3) Anything else I should know?

TIA!

I was wondering the same but shouldn't it be the same as other long haul UA upgrades?

Why wouldn't Plan B work here? It's not guaranteed but it seems to have pretty high chances.

ETA: Plan B seems to be only for awards.

That's exactly my point: I have absolutely no clue how long-haul upgrades work.

GPU/SWU commonly known as system-wides  can used to upgrade to the next class of service.
Generally, W class is the lowest upgradable fare.
If there's "confirmed" upgrade availability then it would be reasonable to acquire a system-wide in order to upgrade, otherwise i wouldn't bother as the likelihood of getting upgraded for non elites is slim.

To determine if there's confirmed upgrades on a particular flight, enable expert mode and look for "R" class.

Or search on EF...

If there is space you get upgraded instantly, if not, you're wait-listed...

The award space is usually much wider open than the upgrade space, that why it's not very common.

"R" should be avail and "I" not? not really...

Show me a few examples please. I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

We are talking now about int'l upgrades - not domestic, and also confirmed upgrades at the time of the booking, which is very uncommon.
