It's hardly obvious that כיון דנפיק trumps ללכת בדרכיו (or whatever term you want to use for that), much less when accompanied by expressed hesitation.
Most of the times the rebbe used כיון דנפיק (here he did not), it coincided with, not countered, הנהגת רבו"נ
In general, (ניט) געזען ביי'ם שווער was bordering on hora'a
