authorizing large charges
« on: January 25, 2015, 08:30:53 PM »
I was on the phone with Chase and amex several times warning them of large purchases and they still kept getting declined until finally they would go through. Any advice for best approach

Nothing that will guarantee it. You can call and let them know, get the app so you can approve fraud charge right away and setup text messages so you can do the same thing.

I have the regular bank app.
I just leave it open during the purchase and if it gets denied I'll get an alert?
And where do you sign up for texts? Do you get it immediately and you can approve and the purchase then guys through?

I think you can login once you get denied. Chase i think sends a text or an email. Not sure exactly how that works, but probably off your original signup information.

Correct. I do not believe there is anything that will work for that.

Well they learn that you spend a lot at, say, target for example

IME Chase usually works fine if I give them a heads up. Giving Amex a heads up doesn't really do much.

All banks will eventually learn your spending pattern. However as MP said, getting the app and/or making sure you get emails sent the right way will enable quick resolution. Happened to me with Amex, I got the email and clicked confirm and reswiped without issue.
Also - why not just post this in the red card thread since that's what this was for ;)

I gave Barclay a heads up and it didn't help the rep claimed it had to do with the target breach therefore putting a note on the account won't help
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Thought about it but figured it didn't only apply to target

How do you avoid an FR from amex when doing large charges? I've heard of many situations that when they had large charges on new accounts they suspended accounts and made an FR.

Actually tried loading $500 on RC some time ago with my Chase Freedom and got denied. Card worked fine after that. Got a call from Fraud Services a week later ( :o) and they asked me to verify that I was the one trying to make that purchase.
Anyway, they said that in the future I should just call in advance and let them know. Haven't tried it yet though....

They want you to call every time you do a $500 purchase ? :o
What's the credit line on that card ?

Around $12K, they said that it got flagged because I don't usually make such large purchases at Target. True that!   ;D
