DDF FAQ's
« on: May 14, 2012, 02:38:00 AM »
Time for a glossary >> Time for an FAQ forum >> Time for a wiki. It always comes back to that.

Does anyone know only one forum in SMF can be modified for indefinite editing (leaving the other ones fixed)? This way we can kinda have an FAQ style thingy, but each post only editable by the OP.
i have always wanted to make a FAQ due to all the questions being repeated over and over and having a hard time to find answers myself because a lot of info is scattered all over and its hard to put them together.

i realized that it can take hours on end to do such a thing, so i thought some team work would be great, and if i started a few Q:A then maybe a mod can make it possible for everyone to edit the post and add to it - and if Dan or other users that know their stuff really well can double check it to make sure its correct so we dont run in to a 'big mess' like the rest of the forum.  OR if everyone will just post there FAQ's like a regular post and Dan will decide if it should go into the main list.

i was thinking that every category should get a FAQ and this way it will be in order.

so i will start just a few with CC's and if this hits off then it can be moved over and be stickied to CC's.

in the following post is a few things i gathered, not much but just the start - i dont know if the format i made it in is good cuz it may be hard to find stuff, but if someone has a diff idea please share. (like a bunch of questions which link to answer which are in posts below)

General Credit Card FAQ’s

Q: Where do I start? I have bad credit? How do I build my credit?
A: Start by signing up to a few store CC’s (Gap, BR, Macy etc..) and build your way up slowly. Alternatively, get yourself added as an Authorized User (AU) on some else’s Credit Card.

Q: How often should I apply for a new CC?
A: Best would be to wait 90 days or so, but you can every 30 days.

Q: What is a 3BM? What is a 2BM?
A: http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=8028.0 , and 2BM is the same thing, less 1 browser!

Q: How can I find out my credit score (for free)?
A: A FICO score usually will cost, though there are a few trials – myfico.com and others
A FAKO score will be free – Creditkarma, creditsesame, and others

Q: What is FICO and FAKO?
A: FICO is your real score. FICO is the score lenders use to evaluate you for credit; FAKO scores are meant to simulate FICO (or provide an alternatives scoring algorithm), but sometimes tend to be far off what a person's FICO is.

It has been mentioned many times that the card will make it on to your report even without submitting the SSN

Always? I don't think so.

Incorrect.

You can always request to add the AU's ssn even in instances where don't need to have it added.

either way, the ssn needs to be on there, so the post needs to be modified

Chase sometimes matches up SSNs with AUs automatically.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

SO If i add my siblings onto my cards as AU's with their ssn they will get good credit history? (I thought "piggybacking" no longer works besides for with parents/children) How long does this take for it to effect their CR?

to save time and effort i think it will be much easier and faster to make a FAQ with links to the corret thread, something like this:

Just to clarify what Saver2000 is saying: (w/o being rude)

1. Topic: Signing up for multiple cards help - here, here, here, here
2. Topic: Buying gift cards/credit cards to rack up points - OK
3. Topic: Credit Score before and after 3bm - here, here
4. Topic: Does the 3bm work for the same exact card - here
5. Topic: Which credit cards have a high spending requirement - here, here
6. Topic: Anyone get the Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet? - here, here, here
7.  Topic: Contest idea  - OK (maybe should be in Just shmooze
8. Topic: Text message only plan - here, here
9. Topic: What is the difference between regular miles and Medallion miles - here, here, here
10. Topic: What is the best site (or sites) to get credit score? - here, here, here, here
11.  Topic: How much can one make from credit cards? - here
12. Topic: Malcolm Gladwell video - OK
13. Topic: Explanation of card abbreviations in this forum - here, here
14. Topic: Web code to zoom in on images help here
15. Topic: Best site(s) for online trading - OK
16. Topic: Flash for Canon dslr camera - OK
17.  Topic: What do people do after first year of having a card - here, here

19. Topic: AMEX Black - here, here
20. Topic: What does it take to get banned from a credit card? - here
21. Topic: Are there cards that allow you to pay balance with debit cards? - here
22.  Topic: How long do banks keep info for? - here
23.  Topic: Looking to do two 3bms? - here, here
24. Topic: How do I get my gmail to forward to my iPod? - here
25.  Topic: 3bm Platinum, Gold, and Starwoods - here and many more 3bm threads besides a few of your own!

out of 26 threads you have 5 threads that havnt been brought up really.

to save time and effort i think it will be much easier and faster to make a FAQ with links to the corret thread, something like this:
first of all that does take a lot of time as well, and i would have to find the answer to each question and link to that post. - i dont want to go thru hundreds of pages of threads to find it, if i dont know the answer.
what i did then, was a link to those topics, and that person has to search.

i think a FAQ would be more practical

  • Location: The value of a forum such as this one is not in that one can post a question and receive an answer, but in that the question has most likely been asked before, and the answer is available to him that will but only use the search function.
  • Programs: 1. Search on google. 2. Search in the right board of DDF with a general word or two. 3. Read the wiki. 4. Read the thread. 5. Ask away.

I think this is a great Idea. It is similar to the idea of a wiki but possibly more integrated into the forums since the wiki never kicked off :'( Here is another one of which card to use for what? Here is a quote from Dan.
 "My current strategy is :
-$25+ purchases (including car rentals due to primary CDW), and foreign purchases, excluding dining, airfare, hotels, telecom, cable, office supplies, 5% category, gas, Open Savings Partners, and Gap Inc purchases on United Club.
-Purchases under $25 and 5% categories on Freedom.
-Dining, airfare, and hotels (including foreign purchases in those categories) over $10, and car rental in Israel goes on Sapphire Preferred WMC.
-Purchases at SPG hotels as well as purchases that I want warranty, return, dispute, or purchase protection on goes on Starwood.
-Open Savings purchases go on Starwood Business.
-Hyatt purchases on Hyatt.
-Telecom, cable, office supplies (including gift cards for Amazon, etc), and gas on Ink Classic.
-Gap Inc purchases go on Banana Lifetime Luxe.

I don't have an AMEX PRG right now, but I'll probably shift airfare and groceries there when I get my next one."

How can I edit a post that I made? I see that posts are often edited, and I searched throughout the site, and couldn't find a way. Is there a post count threshold?
