BDE. I delayed my trip to Eretz Yisroel by one week, and now I won’t see R’ Chaim זצ״ל again in this world.

Devastating and shocking. What a loss for all of us.

BDE - I've been learning a few of his seforim on a daily basis over the last few months - starting with his Shemitta sefer last August and the Orchos Yoshor which my daughter and SiL gave me for Chanukah. I had heard stories and psak about him, but learning these seforim have shown me how keenly aware he was of people and their needs. Reading this was like a punch in the gut.

I just realized something. R’ Chaim זצ״ל would make a siyum every Erev Pesach on Kol Hatorah Kula. On a leap year he'd have an extra month, which is famously when he would write his seforim. If my math is correct, because this year is a leap year, he would have finished Kol Hatorah Kula one last time yesterday..

Anyone have a nice vort or story that I can share at the shabbos table about/from R' Chaim?

R’ Yitzchok Zilberstein writes in his sefer Aleinu Leshabeach that once, R’ Chaim was uncertain about some features of a certain type of grasshopper that came up in his studies. A short while later, he looked up and noticed a grasshopper had landed inside his room. After some scrutiny, he was able to see that this was the species of grasshopper he was contemplating earlier. He searched for the details he needed, and it departed.

(A similar story is said to have occurred with Rashi regarding the details of the Eiphod).

After R’ Yitzchok (his brother-in-law) told someone this story in shul, the man expressed skepticism that the story was plausible. When the fellow went home, he found his apartment infested with grasshoppers..

Rabbi Nosson Scherman, the general editor of Art Scroll, a leading publisher of Jewish religious texts, recalled a legend told about Rabbi Kanievsky that offers a flavor of how astonished his followers were by his powers.

Once, when asked on the spot how many times the name of Moses is mentioned in the Torah, Rabbi Kanievsky performed a mental tabulation and answered: 97. When he was told that a computer had counted 99 mentions, Rabbi Kanievsky pointed out that the extra two words used the same Hebrew letters as Moses but that they had completely different meanings.

He had every minute of his day planned out in a way that he finished כל התורה כולה every year. When it was an Ibbur Yur, he always published a new Sefer on the Rambam with the extra time he had.

I've seen a clip of R Chaim affirming this story. The man asked him if to publicize it so it will strengthen yidden's Emunah, to which Reb Chaim humbly agreed to...
