when to cancel cards after bonuses post
« on: March 24, 2011, 01:54:46 PM »
since september i have collected a bunch of cards. When to cancel? Why to cancel as long as it's before the yearly fee is due? I have 2 AA citi personal accounts, 2 One Pass CO chase accounts, 1 chase united, 1 Amex platinum, 1 SPG AMEX, one Venture. If i cancel the CO one pass i guess i loose the free first piece of luggage. HELP please.

If you don't need the benefits of the card, you can cancel as soon as the annual fee hits (I think you have 30 days to cancel). Otherwise there's really no reason to close em sooner. The only thing you might not want to do is close them all at once.

For Chase cards use a different frequent flyer number. For Citi YMMV. For Amex you're best off closing it. With most issuers if there's an annual fee and you close the card within 3-60 days you get the fee back (or most of it, prorated), but not with Chase.

Depends on the card I think. with Citi for example you can get (or not get, YMMV) approved for the same card over again even though the first one is open. Closing the Citi card doesn't seem to help in getting approved for a new card.  IIRC with AMEX it's better to close the card first, wait, and then reply.

Double post... Once the miles post to your AAdvantage account, you don't lose the miles.
