I booked a car rental at a non-airport location. I'm very particular about the vehicle size/type, and I don't want to get there and be told that they don't have it and that they can upgrade or downgrade me (something that is very common at smaller locations).
The airport location nearby (where rates are through the roof) has a Preferred Plus Select & Go aisle where I can choose any vehicle, and there's a much higher chance that they'll actually have my desired size/type available.
If I reserve a vehicle for one day at the airport location with dropoff scheduled at my desired non-airport location, is there a chance that the non-airport location will let me check out the same vehicle that I'm dropping off, thereby ensuring that I get the vehicle I want? Or do they have to return the vehicle to the original location anyway (in this case the airport), so they'll prohibit me from getting that same vehicle and I'll have the same upgrade/downgrade problem that smaller locations are known for?
Note: both reservations are for my desired vehicle type- the only "shtick" here is choosing the vehicle from a larger selection at the airport, returning it at the city location the next day, and checking it out a few minutes later at the city location with my cheaper reservation.
Any data points would be appreciated.
