AA miles expired. Any recourse?

My 48k AA miles just expired because I was not paying attention to expiry policy. I can buy them back for $400, which isn't worth it for me. Anyone know another option to get them reinstated at no cost or lower cost?

Yes, that's the answer!  I called AA and can get a "Mileage Reactivation Challenge".  Have to earn 2000 Loyalty Points in 3 months. Easy. Thanks, Dan.

That's the whole requirement now? Did they email you details?
Haven't received the email because I haven't signed up yet.  The clock on 3 months starts ticking after I sign up.  I have one year from the date the miles expired to complete the challenge, so I will sign up once I'm ready to earn the loyalty points through spend and other activities.

For reference, here's the content of the email they send, which I found on another website:

Thank you for registering for the Mileage Reactivation Challenge. We're delighted that you have chosen to reconnect with the AAdvantageŽ program to reactivate your expired miles.

All you need to do is earn 2,000 Loyalty Points within 3 months of registration to reactivate your eligible expired miles.

Your eligible expired miles will be restored up to 72 hours after your completed requirements post to your account. Learn more about all the ways you can earn miles plus Loyalty Points toward status with our 1,000+ partners and get started earning today. Don't forget you earn 1 Loyalty Point for every 1 eligible base mile earned.
