« on: October 25, 2023, 09:53:10 AM »
I have windows 10 on a cheap laptop and can upgrade to windows 11.
What are the pro's and con's of one VS the other ?

I've never found a good reason to upgrade Windows since I had Windows 7.

Maybe not from a UI/feature perspective. But the latest versions of Windows are more secure and offer a lot of under-the-hood functionality that Windows 7 doesn’t. The latest versions of Windows are probably also fastest, especially on recent hardware.

I don't use W7, just saying I never opted into another upgrade since then.

Currently using W10 on laptop and desktop, don't see any reason to opt into W11.

The things I’ve stated for W7 are the same for W10 > W11, usually things you don’t see because they aren’t in the UI.

W10 is actually easier on the hardware than W7, but no one asked me that.
W10 is as secure as W11 as of today (despite the big uproar, most mobos have TPM activated). That will change whenever Microsoft stops supporting it, as of now officially the end of 2025. Unless you like figuring out where everything is now that it was moved around, there's no reason forcing you to upgrade. I use W10 on one computer and didn't upgrade, W11 on the other because it came with it and was less anoying to use than to switch to W10. And I DO find it annoying, but only in a mild, background way.
EDIT: You can expect features to be introduced mostly only on W11. I'm still waiting for one compelling enough to switch, though.

I absolutely love windows 11, and I didn't go to 10 for a long long time

Windows 11 has a lot of cool additions but mostly relevant if you're a power user or a developer.

I'm certain areas, performance is also a lot better (with the right combination of hardware).

This is if I should upgrade, since there is no thread for Windows10 that I can compare the two.

Much of the discussion there is about precisely this question, about upgrading.

There's lots of small things that make the overall experience better / more enjoyable. If you don't notice the difference then no need to upgrade. If your getting a new computer I would clean install 11 because it's the software your going to be using sooner or later

If you don't notice the difference then no need to upgrade whatever. If you're getting a new computer, I would leave whatever it has on it and think about it again in 2025, unless you hear about some feature only W11 has that you want.
FTFM.  ;)

All I know is Windows11 cost was $99 for me.
I downloaded w11 and my system crashed. Paid support to re-download w10. Though what I don't understand is why I'm getting pop ups. Your system is ready for the w11 update. And it's compatible.  But for $99 who's to speak to. I'm glad I got it back up and running.
The weird part was I managed to get the laptop to start up normally every 20th try. Again it was random when I got it to work.
That allowed for me to back up everything via oneDrive and then didn't care to wipe the whole computer. Made everything easier from that step on.    It was a simple link avlb on dell.com made to re-download w10. Since I don't work for Dell or in computers there was no way I would have known how to do that. Though it was not complicated to do.

My advice is to stay away from Windows 11. I had a low-cost PC with Windows 10 that I switched to Windows 11. It worked well for a month, but after that it slowed down so much that I couldn’t use it. I switched to Linux instead.
