Even with the average polling error, it only happened once that the error made a difference between positive and negative, and that was in 2000 when Gore still lost.

So, errors aside, the polls have still predicted the winner every time.

I would say the good news for Trump is the similarity of this election to the 1980 election when the support of Reagan was severely underestimated. We could see the same thing this year.
