I come from the school of thoght that while it is nice to look in kisvei yados and new translations, the main learning is based on what was around for the previous doros.
(How do you understand based on the HaMeor translation, like what we have or kapach?)

I do not specifically ascribe to your school of thought. Also, the Rambam in yad, written afterwards, makes no mention of that, which upholds the kapach translation. (Also, there is no source in Chazal for such an idea).

It’s a bit rough but I believe the Hamoar translation can be understood that way as well.

Rav Urin Reich has a maamer on this in ישורון, לגwhere he vehemently makes the case for *my understanding. He struggles with the פירוש משניות, unaware of the alternative translations.
