I usually just fill up the small garbage can with ice from the ice machine and keep the milk in there over night.

I would be careful with that as they sometimes have sensors that automatically charge you for removed items even if you replace them.

They once wanted to charge me for the entire fridge (I had emptied it out) so I told them that I just needed the space and I had put everything back and the didn't charge me anything.

i learned that the bottom half of the mini bar fridge has the cold air (wine, beer)
the top half where the soda cans are is warm - no putting milk there...

Another idea is to tell them that you need a fridge for dietary purposes (aka kosher). This is not a lie. Don't know if it works every time but I have had success with it in the past.

I have mentioned food allergies and that I need special foods.  That has worked for me in the past as well.  In fact, when the room had 1 mini fridge I actually got a second one sent up.  Plenty of space to store food.
