Those who started using it to describe Trump certainly did. And I think more than 1% certainly knew it was a Nazi reference, even if they didn't know the precise history of the term.
The phrase itself was coined by Hitler who said Jews created the lie blaming World War 1's loss on ... (I forget, not Googling, as per instructions . The idea being the lie is so far removed from the truth, no one could possibly make it up and it must be true. Then the phrase was used to describe Goebell's propaganda about Jews in the years leading up to the Holocaust.
IIRC Trump has used the phrase "big lie".
