How to avoid $175 fee??
« on: June 03, 2011, 10:50:09 AM »
I forgot to cancel the Amex Gold card I opened last year (first year free) and now they're charging me $175 for another year.  Is there any way that I can get out of it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

cancelling within 60 days should get you a refund. If you want to keep the card call and see what kind of retention bonus they'll give you

Thanks!  I had no idea that I had 60 days to cancel after the fee kicked in.  I called and canceled both of my cards without a problem.

No.  And I spoke with more than one rep to feel it out.   It was also interesting that only one of the reps mentioned the 60 day cancellation period to me and the rest were happy to cancel my card with charging me the $175 yearly fee, even though I told them that I had just been billed.

do chase and citi also allow you to cancel the card after the annual fee already posted and get the fee refunded?
