As noted above, really hard to get anything from chatting with Amex reps. It seems that you have to putpac.
This was my experience with them today. (and of course no more SM, it directs you to chat. Tried a few times to get around it)

you: When I signed up for it the offer was only for 25k starwood points with 5k in purchases over 6 mo
Ash: okay
you: Now Amex is offering 30 starwood points, I have been a loyal Amex customer, spend money every month w my amex cards and would like to be matched with the new promo offer
you: I only got the card a couple of weeks ago, mid July
you: Had I known to wait I could have waited 2 to 3 weeks and got the better offer
Ash: I am sorry...Promotions keep on changing on day to day basis...You'll receive points as per the promotion you receive your card
Ash: However, I understand that you wish to avail a better offer
Ash: Therefore, I would suggest you to call the number on the back of your Card
Ash: They'll assist you accordingly
you: ok, so there isn't anything you can do on your end? I have to actually call in?
Ash: I am sorry, all the marketing offers sent by American Express to its customers is purely on solicitation basis.
you: This offer is a public offer, it's on Amex main site

Ash: I understand...but your Card was offered under a different promotion...
you: Both of which were public offers, not a special private offer.
Ash: We on our end will not be able to provide the better offer...
