Title: St. Regis Bal Harbour
Post by: S209 on December 29, 2018, 09:36:06 PM
Since it seems just about everyone on DDF who goes to Miami ends up staying at the St. Regis, @nafnaf12 suggested a thread dedicated to this hotel.

Hereís my two cents: we stayed there twice (within a week). Both times were INCREDIBLE.

Thanks.

Do they allow a roll away bed in the deluxe Queen room? Online it says they don't so I am asking for answer based on experience.

Also
What are the odds for plat elite to get upgraded?

PS. Next suggestion is to open a thread dedicated to restaurants in Miami/Surfside.  :)

Very good odds IME, although an ďupgradeĒ to a junior suite will actually get you into a smaller room, just usually with a better view and butler service

Itíll happen..

You can currently book it for 60K MT/SPG points, or you can buy a voucher in the Marriott Certs thread for around $300

I vote to keep this in the South Florida thread. I like the one stop shop for all info related to planning a trip to the South Florida area. If people find the info hard to find, @TimT can give some seminars on how to search.

+1 individual hotels don't normally get their own thread. And when this hotel becomes one of the new MT categories and becomes unattainable, this thread will be dead anyway.

It would likely cost too much. Social hall started at like $20k/night iirc, that's just one small cost. And they will probably need multiple ballrooms which will cost a whole lot more.

And with MT raising the rate it just wont make sense to crash.

There are a ton of people who spend 40k plus for a room
There is no other hotel like this that has a pesach program
They could easily even charge 40k for a basic room and fill up the hotel

There are always families that spend 150k by every pesach program
If u make an elite program with best of everything.
Put workers at grand beach...

AFAIK hotel's don't charge programs for the ballroom, as long as you commit to filling an X amount of rooms and servicing an X amount of people. They charge a service charge of around $100 per person per day (at a 4-star hotel, I'm sure at the SR it would be more) for waiters etc. and the ballroom is included so to speak.

That's a fortune and most of those people go to reputable programs that have been around for years. Running a program in this hotel would probably price most people out. If the guy is stuck with 10% of rooms that don't sell then he won't make it.

Usually programs have it at hotels that go for $150 a night
They charge max 15k for a couple for basic foom.
St regis basic room goes for under $1000 and even cheaper with having a bulk amount
Why couldn't they charge 25k a couple ?

Four Seasons Whistler is a 5 star program at a hotel that costs well north of $150/night and the base room cost less than $15K a couple.

This may be a shock but the St. Regis Bal Harbour, while it is a very nice hotel especially for the area, it is very far from the nicest hotels in the world, that would actually justify a $40k price tag. You'd be looking at whole resorts being rented out at that price.

This week is available.
This weekend is available.

Seems they are playing room release games. Seems that only Deluxe 1 king Ocean View is available on points and they seem to withhold or are out of that room for many dates.

Some hotels started playing games by renaming multiple room types as in Ocean front, Ocean views and higher floor.

A quiq work around this might work [ at St Regis they actually block room type but at other properties it works ]

When booking Marriott/spg award reservation there usually needs to be a base room. Sometimes though, the base room may be available but not for points and a message will pop up saying "this hotel does not take award reservation at this time" [ clicking >< does not help ]. The solution is to make the reservation on different dates and call the hotel directly  [or ask marriot to contact the hotel] and ask them to change the dates.

The name of the system where marriot/spg can  change dates is called Fossi [not sure if spelled correctly]. I'm not sure central Marriott can do it but on hotel level they definitely can.
One caveat, this will most likely will only work if there the same  room type . If there is same room room then the system will force itself  to initiate to a new reservation which will not work because there are no base rooms available.

This is my understanding, if any1 has better work arounds, please post.

I did this for the Residents Inn Surfside on blocked dates  and worked like a charm.

It's not a matter of smarter it's a matter of knowing how to work the system and the reservation manager being flexible.

I did this at a different St Regis, so I assume it's not really the method it's more your attitude when calling and if they are willing to make an exception and be flexible. .

But giving elite benefits actually effects their bottom line, so they need to find a way out.

It's an amazing points value right now, it's a gorgeous hotel, it's Miami in the winter, and it's an amazing location for the best kosher restaurants and shuls in Miami. Well, not the best huls, but good shuls nonetheless. :)

This thread seems to be encouraging people to grab available nights in hopes of flipping for a profit... No actual advise or content about this specific hotel that you can't already find in the South FL thread. Doesn't seem like it's in the spirit of the DDF...
Title: Re: St. Regis Bal Harbour
Post by: es21729 on January 24, 2019, 12:17:59 PM
Not necessarily. In my case I made a 5 night reservation (feb 9-14) but in the end I'm staying at a different hotel in Miami. And I reserved 3 rooms for a weekend (feb 15-17) anticipating having family join me, but in the end I'm only using one room myself so I have 2 extra. Rather than just cancel and redeposit the points I'm offering to sell the rooms if it will help someone here. But I'm not going to sell it "cheap" as I'd rather hold on to the points then.

That's not to say that others here aren't trying to book and flip, but I didn't book intending to do that.
Title: Re: St. Regis Bal Harbour
Post by: KSMH on January 24, 2019, 12:23:55 PM
So isn't this basically selling points thru a proxy, a room.

A line has to be defined between having a room and selling it as a courtesy when there is no availability and selling a room to turn a profit when there is no availability.

They don't charge (unless its a prepaid)but I've seen a lot of merchants doing like a quick test (not sure what the right term is) to see if its a valid card.

That is what I meant, they will test the card with usually a $1 charge which shows as pending , then drops.

Works in many hotels and YMMV on a level of a  front desk  rep.

Happened to myself many times and was never asked for ID.

I was once in the W Miami and some drunk dude in front of me claimed he lost his key and they asked him for ID to confirm.

Last time I was there I arrived at 12.15 noon, earlier than the 1.30 am early check in I requested,I had to wait around 35-40 minutes, which was not bad. Sorry if my previous post was not clear.

I was just there, got there at 2 and had 2 wait over 3 hours for a room! I'm Platinum Elite.
Now to be fair, I got a room with 2 beds, so not sue if that's considered an upgrade or what.
Check in is at 4, and my room was only ready at 5:15, and that was with a  lot of pushing on my part.

Has the SRBH changed their cancelation policy?
Looking to book for January 2020 and getting the following.

About this reservation:
You may cancel your reservation for no charge until February 14, 2019. Please note that we will assess a fee if you must cancel after this deadline. If you have made a prepayment, we will retain all or part of your prepayment. If not, we will charge your credit card. This fee equals your room charge plus tax for all the nights of your reservation.

The Ritz in Bal Harbor says you can cancel for no penalty until a week before....

Yes. they probably don't want people booking for 2020 under lower rates and then canceling. I got one res in before they made the change.

I Can't figure out whats going on.

Some dates in December and January 2020 have a 30 day cancellation.
Some have 7 days, and some can't be canceled without penalty a day after booking.
I booked 01/04/2020 for 5 nights and have till 7 days prior to cancel.
When I tried booking a second room for the same dates the cancellation policy is a year in advance!

Wow, they are getting downright dirty. Just booked a stay in January 2020 And the cancel by date for a refund is 2/27/19!!!

How does Marriot even let that???

Wow, this is ridiculous. Marriott should not allow this. Who can make unchanged plans for a hotel stay this far without a reasonable cancelation policy.

How many nights? Seems like more than 2 nights and/or a Saturday night is triggering the 1 day cancellation clause.

As a separate point, itís amazing how they removed the deluxe room inventory for any availability (till a few days prior).

Hotel is not available on points for the 2 nights that I want, but if I extend my stay for 5 nights then there is availability.
Marriot told me over the phone that if I need to cut my stay short I should just tell the hotel while I am there. They will then reissue the certificate for the time that I actually spent at the hotel.
Has anyone ever done this?
I do not want to be out an extra 120k points!

sure, make the reservation and as soon as it's confirmed you can call to remove the rest of the nights, out of curiosity what are your dates?

I'm looking for the 23-24 one night, motzai shabbos.
If anyone has please pm

between 7 and 30 days usually. I have one that was nearly a year from booking was only cancelable for a day or 2. Ridiculous.
