Insane.

Unbelievable!
I wonder how much he will get for the movie rights to the "Catch me if you can" sequel?
Seems odd that the article doesn't state more clearly that he merely pretended to be "Simon Leviev"

Lol
Ye, I didnt even realize he was Israeli till the article showed his house in Bnei Brak..

Not clear if he pretended or actually legally changed his name. (Is he capable of doing anything legally?)

maybe they will also hire him as an FBI instructor like the originals

Ye, I was coming here to make that clear for anyone who didn't ready through the whole article...

One smart fella.
-
Reminds me of a different con who was in the news several months ago. Did similar stuff, but completely different. Was also riveting.

Sad that he put his brain to con people instead of doing business for example. Trust me a brain like that we be a close deal killer that every company will want to hire. If only he use it the right way .. sad.
Fell bad for all the victim.

Can we merge this with the "Don't swipe recklessly" thread?

Reminds me of a story in the frum community not too long ago, similar

Or Gilbert Chikli who invented the "CEO scam" and was able to persuade bank and company officers to transfer money by simply ringing them and impersonating their CEO. He lived in luxury in Ashdod for many years, but was dumb enough to travel to Ukraine to be arrested and handed over to France.

Very interesting way to tell a story, though about halfway through it started getting more annoying than entertaining.
-
There was a shin bet guy who married a frum woman to infiltrate the community after he gathered enough Intel and several children later, he just picked up and left
-
Did none of you feel bad for Cecile?!? This is a person with feelings.
She says that what hurt most was the betrayal, less the money
Personally, it felt more like MTV catfished than catch me if you can, although yes in catch me if you can he does use the nurse.
-
@Dan really disappointed. A random conman no matter how effective is no catch me if you can. This guy never faked being a doctor or a pilot. He simply trolled women.
-
Sorry that I'm not up to date on MTV?
He jetsets across the world, has multiple aliases, and gets old girls to pay for new girls to keep the scam going. Seems close enough to me.
-

Agree, nothing special about this story.

Who was the guy on here that specializes in finding people @Emkay ? ;)

Yes it was called "le coup du président" .. he invented, and a lot of people did it ..

Hayut grew up in the predominantly ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak in central Israel and as a child studied in a Talmud Torah elementary school near his home. His father, Yohanan Hayut, is the chief rabbi of El Al.

Just for a bit of background, this guy's father is the "Rabbi" of Elal.

So he's Lev Leviev Halevi? Ooh boy, that's a mouthful.

There's nothing glorifying about this guy other than he's a crook and a chilul hashem. Catch me if you can was creative and he at least mostly ripped off corporations lol

I was in JFK T8 and this guy approached me asking me if I speak Hebrew. After I said yes he said he lives in Boston, needs to take the Amtrak from Penn Station to Boston and that he left his cc on the plane, couldn’t get it and cancelled it. He needs $80 and he’ll give me his number and pay me back. I feel a little guilty but was kinda not sure how legit he was. I didn’t have money either way but took a pic of him just in case... anyone have a similar experience?

This could actually be very useful for Google to work on their AI where it comes to written ABGD languages and identifying names within text.

Now he was extradited to Israel. Just a little over 3 months for extradition. Not too bad.

So sad. Could’ve used his capabilities for great things.

I like how Google translates his last name

Ditto, he stole millions. He's barely repaying!!

What would you expect? Hebrew being an ABGD language and names being problematic in AI translation to begin with, I would have expected nothing else.
-

How do you know? What will it take to prove in a manner that's acceptable in a court of law. It could be extremely protracted. That's where plea deals come in.
Since extradition was involved here (not sure on what grounds) this might involve only crimes that occurred in Israel rather than the EU. If this is about the incidents in the EU, I would assume Israeli courts would be extra careful, so as not to jeopardize the ability to have Israeli citizens sent to Israel for trial by agreeing to a ridiculous plea deal.
On the surface this sounds low, but due to above issues, I would guess there's more to the story.

Recently released from Israeli jail. Living in a Tel Aviv hotel luxury suite, claims to be working with Netflix on a documentary.
