Title: How to bring matches back on a flight from Israel?
Post by: NTorch on April 05, 2019, 08:43:42 AM
My wife has a special shabbos matchbox and my daughter wanted to bring back the extra long matches they sell in Israel.

TSA says that you can bring a box in your carry on but I find no information for flying internationally.

She will be flying Finnair and connecting out of Helsinki.

Any information would be helpful, thanks!

TSA says that you cannot do that. Do you know if the rules are different when flying Internationally?

I've flown internationally with a lighter in my pocket, not sure if that's different than matches.

Ok, so they sell them for $4, and in many kosher stores in the US, just saying, it's not something unique to Israel that it needs to be schlepped back.

These are the correct size.

The problem is that my daughter wanted to buy something for my wife and my wife did not want her to spend $$$ so she bought what my wife asked for. I don't want my daughter to be disappointed, so I am looking for an eitza on this about how she can bring them back.

Imagine not having the lighter, that means no smoking throughout the entire duration of the trip, torture.
 Inhumane. :)

DH brought home from Israel a shabbos matches box (as a gift) with matches inside. It was in his checked-in suitcase, and he had no issues...

+1 I've flown many times with a lighter and/or matches in my pocket and had no issues going through security.

Though may not be relevant here as this is the other side of the world

I remember reading that 1 lighter is permitted.
but I once had a pack of 3 lighters in carry-on and was fine.

I appreciate everyone's input, but it seems like this a case by case basis for international travel.

why wouldn't you just take a chance, and put it in your check in? In the worst case, they confiscate em... Unless they're so expensive

Thanks so much. I think you are probably correct. I am looking to avoid her being disappointed if she can't bring back the gift my wife asked her to get, but you can only do your hishtadlus.

Maybe tell her to find a nice box, and keep the box and the matches separately, and if the matches are confiscated c"v pyou could buy new ones local and put them in the original box...

Well, wouldn't it be sweet if the husband has a 'whole story' to share with his wife how he sacrificed bringing her home a special gift and it was sadly taken away...

I think you are better off in a carryon then checking it in. I have flown many times with a lighter and no problem. On the other hand, TSA checks check-in bags a lot.

This is my daughter who is bringing my wife the gift.
