Title: What Is The Greatest Travel Hack You Did?
Post by: Yeki89 on April 14, 2019, 12:58:24 PM
I'll start.
I was flying BA JFK to LHR. I wanted to get the front row seats so i told them I sprained my ankle,  and they gave me the front row.
When I was checking in they asked me if I needed a wheel chair, I told them I don't need one now but when I land I will take one. I totally forgot about it.

When I got off the plane there was a wheel chair waiting for me. I went in.

There was a huge customs line, they took me to the side and the agent just stamped my passport and let me right through.
After the attendant brought me to baggage claim, i picked up my suitcase said thank you, gave him a tip and walked away.

Was it worth spraining your ankle just for that? Now you had a sprained ankle for weeks to come!  ::)

What you do is order two vente Americanos. One, you throw in the barrista's face while it is scalding, and the other you grab and run out the door with.

I haven't been here long, but from the context, it seems pretty clear what the Starbucks method is. Take from there and extrapolate the concept to UPS.

To post an actual hack I did.
In the last minute, I made a pair of hidden city tickets for someone to come from LA to NY and back again.
It was half the price he would have paid and I looked like a travel expert.

An actual travel hack - back when I had a jail broken iPhone, I also had an app that allowed me to manipulate the backend of any app. I had fake Delta, American, and JetBlue status. Never had the guts to use it but my brother used the JetBlue and Delta status to skip lines and IIRC used it to get into a lounge.

I had a JetBlue direct flight canceled. They automatically rebooked me with a stopover in Boston. I switched my flight to a later flight with a stop in Florida. And when I landed in Florida I convinced them to let me stay the weekend in Florida. ( flight was Thursday night, instead of continuing to my final destination I took a Saturday night flight)

let's please differentiate between clearly unethical/stealing (using fake status to go into lounge aka stealing food), faking spraining angle to get a better seat (unethical/stealing) and 'travel hack'.

Most people I see coming to the airport and requesting a wheelchair walked right in on their own 2 feet. Many airports are big and can be of a hassle to walk thru even for the average person.

many people who use the wheelchair can walk fine just not long distances - not everyone who needs a wheelchair is a parapalegic.

You can have a 70 year old who just cant stand for long periods of time.

I flew this year to Uman and during the entire flight some rebbish person (that flew econ) stood on his 2 feet in business class to smooze and when we landed I wasn't surprised to see a wheelchair waiting for him.

Heard from someone that flew with one of the Spinka Rebbe from Willy and to bypass the long lines in FRA that had a wheelchair for him...

Now that I'm by a computer:

Paid for ticket w/ DW on glitch fare for ~$1000 pp (received almost 30k AS back pp)
Paid for >2 yo as follows:

And before you ask the obvious, we originally didn't plan to bring infant with us, so we didn't book a glitch ticket for him.

The trick is that BA grants a seat at infant fare for infants that turn 2 mid trip. But no agent knows how to do it, especially with how we ticketed the reservation (AA stock, since BA had issues ticketing the crucial first leg), so it took some time to get things right. But it worked out in the end, at the expense of the F passenger that was bumped.

Best travel hack that everyone can do. If your not a large (width wise) fellow you may want the emergency exit seat for more leg room than any other seat in economy, plus there is a partition between you and person next to you so you dont press against eachother.

Simply ask at the checkin counter for it for free. Cant hurt, and I've gotten it pretty often.

Another Hack ( Was not done on purpose but worked out):
Once booked a last minute flight together with DW but they were both middle seats next to each other.
We separated seats from each other and took middle seats in separate parts of plane.
When we checked in the agent saw that were not seating together and said something to us about being together we then told her we want a aisle, window etc...
At boarding time they put us back together this time giving one of us the middle and one of the us the aisle seat

Booked a seat on JetBlue they "upgraded" me to the exit row aisle. Unfortunately the gentlemen sitting in the middle was not Large he was super sized large with a BO that could kill a Rhino. My whole body was in the aisle and this was not going to work for me. (It was hot and he was sweaty and wearing very short sleeves). Then the Jewish brain clicked into hyper-drive.....When they came to ask if we were willing to help in case of an emergency, I said absolutely not!! Needless to say some other gentlemen who did not see how I was sitting jumped at the offer to get the exit row......The look he gave me on the way out was priceless..

Used to work like a charm in the Admirals Club.
Used to get upgraded to MCE on international flights savings of hundreds of $$.
Recently it's been getting very difficult especially on a Basic Economy ticket.

I once needed a flight to Israel that was sold out, faked my death and they made room for me

Was flying MAN-LHR-JFK on miles in Y, when I got to LHR I went over to the AA desk and I convinced them to open up business class with miles and we canceled and booked a new ticket.

Showed up late to DL award domestic flight, had wine bottles wrapped in sram rap. DL instructed that it might not make it onto the plane. The system let them put it thru. Obviously was delayed, TSA opened it up and as a result baggage wasn't there upon arrival. Went to DL baggage claim desk , they said theyll bring it to me the following day and a 3hr drive. Upon requesting a kit she told me the system reads they shouldn't even dilever it to me because I checked so late, I said thank you and ran out.

A week later I made a claim with DL for delayed luggage and received somewhere around 800 on a 34k award.

Good for you, I think I'm going to start bringing wine on my flights.

May as well get that checked free on Alaskan while flying from the West coast....

Side point, do you think they actually check if there is wine in the wine box? Hard alcohol may be a great market advantage if brought from the West coast!
