First we must be clear on what did happen

Was wondering if they would teach my kid about it in 3rd grade today.
But not yet. I guess 4th or 5th grade?

I feel like the holocaust is a bigger talk for Jewish kids. What age is that done?

No later than 8th.
I had holocaust studies in 7th grade iirc.

Are there text books teachers use to teach 9/11 or it's too recent for that?

10 year olds can understand IME. My kids grew up with a great grandmother who was in Auschwitz.

Im sure there are textbooks except in Minnesota.

In 7-8th grade all should be able to understand at that point. It does not hurt to hold off a year or two.

I did march of the living when I was 21, was extremely powerful and easily one of the most moving experiences of my life. But I don't think I would have appreciated it as much if I was younger. Would likely appreciate it even more today as a parent.

Because of my uncle, I think we talked with the kids briefly about it when they were younger, maybe 3rd or 4th grade. But in simplistic terms - there were really bad people who wanted to hurt america and americans, and they hurt and killed a lot of people.

I had my uncle come speak to their middle school (6-8th grades) 4 years ago and even then he didn't go into to much detail. Now that my older two boys are in HS, I fill them in with more details.

I never thought about that. My oldest kids were in elementary school and my youngest kid was born after.  But it's something that's always been known about/talked about in my house.  In an age-appropriate amount.  Like the Holocaust.  Or the Inquisition. etc.  But this one we have personal memories of.  And know some actual people involved.

Awful that high schoolers aren't being taught basic things about the country they live in, especially when so many of the victims and others affected were part of the frum community in NYC.

Education is a parents job. If you count on the schools to educate your kids they may not learn things that are important and may learn things that are very unimportant.

My girls attend a smaller (some might call it "fringe") school in the community, and I've had nieces (some of them boarded in my house) that attended the larger mainstream school in the community (BTW a good friend whose daughter goes to that school told me yesterday that his daughter came home with an assignment to ask her parents about 9/11). Seeing the contrasts just reinforced my views that the only things I expect my daughters to learn in school are: 1. Proper השקפה (obviously not relying on school, but expecting it to complement what's conveyed at home). 2. Relevant Halochos, and 3. מדות טובות.

Going back on Topic - I think that the earliest kids should be told about it is roughly 5-6th grade (say around 11 years old or so) but in broad terms - there was a terror attack by some bad people. They wanted to kill or hurt americans, a lot of people were killed. Obviously they may still express anxiety and fear, but it's probably easier for them to comprehend and have their fears assuaged than a 7 or 8 year old. (speaking from parental experience - I am not a shrink).

I don't think that the details need to be shared with kids below HS. i.e. the 'misah meshuna' discussions that we had on the original thread are not for kids below 15 or 16. (ex. People jumping to their deaths to prevent from being burned.)

sorry to go off topic again but could not disagree more

The 3 things you mention are much more important to be taught at home and only reinforced by the school

School is meant to learn the things you can't teach at home such as math, science, history, social studies and the like.

1. How many hours should be dedicated to those and over how many years?
2. Science? History? Social Studies (not sure what that means)? - What percentage of kids end up having any practical benefit from those, and to what extent?

It is called be exposed to the world and universe instead of being stuck in a cocoon.
Maybe if they studied different things when they grow up they wouldn't be asking of DDF on how to do basic things around the house.  :)

The amount of time and the amount of years is decided based on the school you choose but I think at least a rudimentary base of knowledge is important

Your right that a lot of kids might not need to use all the knowledge they learn in school everyday but that doesn't mean they should have a basic understanding of it.

depending what the child ends up doing then they can use the knowledge every day.

He means that it's the parents' responsibility. They generally fulfill (most) of that responsibility by sending their children to a school they feel will educate the children in a manner they find acceptable. But it's not as simple as 'I enrolled my kid in school, now I don't need to do anything else'. You have to ensure your child is learning what you want them to learn, monitor their progress, step in to teach things you feel the school might be leaving out that you want your child to know.

BTW, how many people 'round here know it also as כג אלול without looking it up?
My third grade daughter came home from Beis Rivkah with a 9/11 project.

He means that it's the parents' responsibility.
Not to self. Try and figure out what someone means not what they say.  :)

So I should assume you meant 'Note' to self? :)

Maybe if they studied different things when they grow up they wouldn't be asking of DDF on how to do basic things around the house.  :)
I'm pretty sure that stuff is not usually taught in schools.

It is called be exposed to the world and universe instead of being stuck in a cocoon.

Maybe if they studied different things they'd know how to spell.

Maybe if they studied different things they'd know how to spell.
Maybe if they took school seriously instead of smoking weed it would have helped a lot more.

מדות טובות.

in that order?

You need to make your own that whenever he writes something about Trump it replies SCOTUS.

Nah. First of all I mostly ignore his posts about politics. Second: he probably writes 100 times "need to get out more" for every one time I mention SCOTUS or regular english.

But it is a more appropriate reply to more things he writes.
