Title: Scotch Or Vodka?
Post by: AsherO on October 25, 2011, 08:50:50 PM
My guest bedroom in Far Rockaway? Good kiddush..goose or stolly from the freezer  ;)

That's what you consider good Vodka?

What about Tito's, Belvedere, Zabrowka, Beluga, Imperial Soft, Zyr etc. etc.??

Had Imperial Soft and it tasted like Absolut...I will have to give the others a try though.

Had Imperial Soft and it tasted like Absinthe...I will have to give the others a try though.

Mind you Absolut (no e at the end, thought you were saying Absynthe for a second) isn't that bad (compared to Smirnoff, RS, etc). To be fair when I had Imperial Soft it was freezing cold so maybe that's why it went down so smoothly.

Those two are scotch whiskeys.

Macallan is overrated IMHO, as a non-whiskey-drinker there are lots of other single malts I'd prefer (e.g. Tomintoul, Laphroaig, Glenmorangie, and others).

The Laphroaig might have to do with the memories associated with drinking it ;)

I can't explain the vodka preference, but I'm sure that's my preference, and I've had my fair share of good scotch.

Not necessarily. Dan's post is a bit confusing in that regard. He may be talking about the Nadurra (which is an 18y/o) or the 1991 from any of the previous years... Clarification in 3...2...1...

Theoretically yes, but try drinking Dewars, Crown Royal, Jack Daniels, Johnny Walker (even the green/blue is blended!!!) etc and you'll immediately agree that scotch is in a class of its own.

$50? Good bottles of both bourbon and scotch can be had for less than that (in the right places). Perhaps that's another reason I'm a Vodka guy ;)

Scoth is different than Irish whiskey, Canadian whiskey, bourbon, tennessee whiskey, etc. Different types of drinks

(1)(i) “Bourbon whisky”, “rye whisky”, “wheat whisky”, “malt whisky”, or “rye malt whisky” is whisky produced at not exceeding 160° proof from a fermented mash of not less than 51 percent corn, rye, wheat, malted barley, or malted rye grain, respectively, and stored at not more than 125° proof in charred new oak containers; and also includes mixtures of such whiskies of the same type.

it is much different than scotch like asking if orange juice and apple juice is the same
best bang for your buck in scotch is glenrothes special reserve (or maybe its calles select reserve) its always on sale for like 3 bottles for 100
and a good bourbon can be had for less than 50

I personally like Scotch.  I think he best value is the Tomintoul 16yr which I know has been mentioned.  Also love all the Livets and Dalwhinnie is also very good.
I don't like Vodka but everyone is raving about a new bottle called Crystalhead.  The bottle is shaped like a skull and people really like it.

Scotch is definitly my favorite. the best (IMHO) I ever tasted was the Glen Ord. In 2004, I went with a couple of friends on a weeklong whiskey tour in Schotland. Best week of my life  ;)
One day we got lost and stumbled upon the Glen Ord Distillery. It was not on our list but deceided to visit it. The rest is history... anyone up for a whiskey tour ??!!  :)

I guess all you guys don't do bourbon for me scotch is like water diluted bourbon!
and about vodka: not bad as a snack after a cold moody winter day, I personally prefer XO [not the cognac]or putinka, level, etc. on ice ahhhhh

Here's how I look at it:

Then you reach the highest point & discover Emunah Pshutah (simple belief).

The best ones out there are the ones that are 100 proof (%50)

My favorite is Stolichnaya 100 proof,  Gray-goose tastes like Motor Oil compared to Stoli

That's what you consider good Vodka?

What about Tito's, Belvedere, Zabrowka, Beluga, Imperial Soft, Zyr etc. etc.??
I've since become a big fan of Tito's. (Actually just had my evening shot) Thanks  ;)

Both are great.  Nadurra 1991 is excellent.

Random questions: does limited edition indeed mean there was a limited amount released? and if so how does one know what that number is?

Thanks.
