I used to hate the stuff (in Zal we were all drinking Zima and Skyy Blue), but I'm slowly learning to appreciate it.
Blue Moon and Blue Moon Honey Moon Summer Ale are both excellent beers.

Great Lakes Holy Moses White Ale and Great Lakes Oktoberfest are also very good.

What types of beer are you tasteing? I don't like beer in general, But a friend of mine brought some from Belgium that were amazing! I'll find out the names later. Beer they sell in crown heights though I would suggest pale-ale by Blue Moon. If you want a pricey beer you MUST try Frambois (Rasberry) Lambic by Lindemens they sell it in Benzy's by the front.

Yuengling is good, haven't had it in a while.  I did that they started selling it in CLE though so I'll have to pick up some.

i think there are 3 diff types of leffe, but yes u thats a nice one there.

and yuengling i hadnt either had in about a year or two and then i saw them selling it in the store so i bought a case for the ST party (on top of the case of Canadian Molson that we already had) and it was a big hit!

I was in Pittsburgh for high school so defiantly had Yuengling then. I don't know what the price is in Ohio but I remember buying a case of 24 for like $18 and it is indeed pretty good. (side not Yuengling is the oldest brewery in america) The beers I had from Belgium were Chimay, Duval, Kwak all 3 were very good. Interesting to note those 3 beers are 7.5% to 8.5% alcohol content, which is a lot more than we have in domestic beers.

same here, its about $19 for 24pk.

My preference is blond/wheat beers, anything called hefe-weitzen (methinks it's half wheat and half barley). Hoegarden is good too (I'm surprised nobody mentioned it), as is Sam Adams summer ale, cherry wheat and some blackberry one they had recently (winter ale, pale ale and the other standard ones aren't to my liking).

Crazy Horse is awesome (anyone know where I can find it in Brooklyn?), and I once had a Slovakian beer which was really good.

Some others that were mentioned which I like are Leffe and Yuengling.

Things I don't like in beer: dark beers, hoppy beers, frothy beers and heavy beers. Oh, and smirnoff ice, zima etc. aren't beer, so please don't mention 'em in this thread :P

Blue Moon was the first beer I actually enjoyed when I drank it.

List please?
not that i have a huge list. and i posted above (http://www.dansdeals.com/forums/index.php?topic=10891.msg134012#msg134012) 2 of my favorite. and then there are those that i like and arent bad at all, like blue moon, canadian molson, beck, budweiser and more. but the topic here is "Favorite" beer.
then there are those beers which i cant put on my "good" list, not that i wont drink it if theres nothing else or if its free :) like heinken, corona...
then theres the ones that go off the list like goldstar ;) and all the diluted beers (taste diluted)

Blue Moon was the first beer I actually enjoyed when I drank it.
again im not saying its a bad beer at all its quite good but the first time i had it - i couldnt say the same as i said by yuengling

Been dying to try Hoegaarden on recommendation from a friend except I can't get the green light kosher wise.

They advertise on their bottle about some flavor infusions (cinnamon and coriander if I remember correctly) which could potentially be a problem and made me worried.

Anyone know of it's kosher status?

I've only had their IPA which I wasn't such a fan of. IIRC, it had a sharp hop bite on the finish.
Eons better than anything they brew at Anheuser Busch though.

Its an IPA. It tastes like a combination between a Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA and a Stone Ruination Ale. 8% ABV. Delicious!

Def an ale. First we ever made was an amber ale and it was excellent. maybe that recipe again.
needs to be a quick one, so that it can ferment for 2 weeks and bottle for a week and be done, since I'll only have 3 weeks after finals before graduation.

ah, I've got an all grain system. It's really not that much more work; you just need a picnic cooler slightly modified with a washing machine hose and a valve.
Comes out a bit cheaper on each batch, and you have  a bit more flexibility in choosing grains. And you end up with 10 lbs of spent grain to make bread with.

I make this recipe http://howto.wired.com/wiki/Bake_Bread_With_Spent_Grains_From_Home_Brewing except that I double the amount of spent grain in it. And I use yeast that I harvested from the fermentation barrel.

I kind of need a wort chiller next. I'll build one for the next batch out of copper piping and a thing to clamp onto the faucet. Should cost about 40 buck.

5 Gallon Batch

8oz of Honey Malt
3.3lbs Pilsen Light liquid malt extract
3lbs Wheat dry malt extract

.5oz Fuggles hops (60 min)
.5oz Fuggles (30 min)
.5oz freshly crushed coriander (10 min)
1oz sweet orange peel (10 min)

1 package Wyeast 3944 Belgian Witbier Liquid yeast
5oz corn sugar for priming

No need for a secondary fermenter on this one. Let it sit on the yeast cake for 2 weeks and it should be ready to bottle then. Measure the SG first to make sure its ready obviously.
Enjoy!

I think it's easier to just buy a wort chiller. They are only a bit more expensive than making it yourself ~$45. Link. (http://www.amazon.com/Super-Efficient-Copper-Wort-Chiller/dp/B00BBGZWZU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367358038&sr=8-1&keywords=wort+chiller)

My bro's built it over bein hazmanim. I can ask where they got instructions from.

I don't reuse the yeast, because I'm too lazy to make sure to keep it sterile and to keep it under the right conditions. I just use it for bread until there's none left.

Thanks for that link. Looks good.

Agreed, reusing yeast is a real pain. Sierra Nevada has been using the same strain in every brew since they opened, which explains why all of their beer tastes the same.

Bought it. It's a wild beast. It blew the cover off my primary twice and would have done it again but I just took the cover off  until the yeast started flocculating. Beer ended up being about 8.5% ABV.

I don't know how I never noticed this thread until now.  My absolute hands down favorite domestic brew is Yeungling (Lager... years ago they made an Ale that I liked just as much).  And the Yeungling brewery in Pottsville, PA is a very fun tour - totally different from the others I went to.  They have a network of underground caves where they used to store the beer before refrigeration existed.

I'm also a fan of most Sam Adams flavors (especially Octoberfest, but ESPECIALLY Cherry Wheat), anything Magic Hat (another interesting brewery), and anything cheap and light enough to drink quickly out of red solo cups with a large group of friends....

As far as foreign beer, I've been into Heinekin in recent months.  In college I was very fond of Killians Irish Red.

Duvel, Kasteel, Chimay and Maredsous are all amazing International beers but they are quite costly especially in Israel.
I know in the states Costco used to sell a 3 pack of Chimay beer with a beer glass for much cheaper then what you will pay in any liquor store.

They are, but there seems to be a disproportionate amount of Belgian/wheat beer lovers on DDF. More than there are hopheads.
I'm gonna add a poll.
ETA. I can't figure out how to add a poll. Is the option still available? I've done it before...

I was thinking,

1. Belgians and wheat(wit).
2. Stouts, Porters, and dark lagers
3. India Pale Ales and Pale Ales
4. Pale Lagers, Pilsners, and light lagers
5. Brown or Red Ales.

Anyone want to add or subtract anything? I can add examples for each style if desired...

That's a beauty.

We brewed last night. It's a very hoppy amber ale. OG was 1.06, uses 4 oz of hops (one is for dry hopping).
It will be ready right after the bar. So I need a name for it that reflects that.

Nice balance. Don't know if you want to mess with the recipe but an ounce of Citra in the dry hop would really kick up the aroma.

How did your brew come out?

Hah! Thanks for asking! We just drank it friday night for the first time.
It was nicely dark, and properly carbonated. It had a nice strong flavor, pretty dominated by the hops. I was hoping for more maltiness with the hops, but that's what we got.
Overall, I'd say it is about as good as the others we've made, but not the best.

I purchased some of the great lakes beer for my purim Seuda and now I see they are on the not recommend list.
At the same time I was under the impression that beer did not need hashgacha if it was domestic and unflavored.

Does anyone have any more insight on this?
