Are these airplane meals or something different? Also, I know that today is only Williamsburg and other locations don't begin until Thursday, but if you go, please let us know which location and what time you went and how the line was.

officially going to be fresh and healthy food. Not sure how airplane meals would fall into that category.

Would be best to see pics of what you actually got.

The picture I saw had non-CY chocolate milk and didnít look like something packaged for transporting home, it was probably just a placeholder.

וואלאווע is a Chassidish hechsher and would never certify non-CY.

Iíll let you know on Thursday. Assuming its gonna be similar to the non kosher offerings. Maybe kemach cereal and cy milk instead of cheerios and non cy. Lunch deli sandwich or chicken wrap, is what the non kosher menu is serving. So again assume it will be similar.

The certification from the Volove is for "Regal-Glatt" so I guess there's the reputation of airplane mael is there. We just need a נחשון to see if they can live up to something better than their  reputation.

I actually checked it out.

Not airline meals. Packed in paper bags (remember this is NYC, can't pack in plastic containers, they will cause the world to end).

These look like school meals (inspired by Michelle Obama).

Fresh whole apple. Bran Muffin (tasted quite good, though texture didn't feel fresh). Hummus. 1% (green) milk. Some sort of whole wheat bread. Lite plain yogurt. Fresh grape tomatoes.

If they would hand out a roll of toilet paper along with the meals, then we would see real lines.

If there was also a bottle of lysol to go along, we might need to contact Guinness to document a world record.

Do you know what are the "three meals" referred to on the page?

"Three Kosher meals a day will be available to any New Yorker who wants one at ten sites in Brooklyn and Queens. The sites are listed below and can also be found in the Meal Hub look up tool."

Are there no Jewish schools in Brooklyn doing free lunch? BYQ has a program fully funded by NYS (at least that's what the email said) providing breakfast and lunch to any family in the school, and they extended the invitation to families from some other Queens schools as well. You pick up twice a week for the whole week. They gave tons of food.

False advertising to market this as three meals and only offer breakfast and lunch.

This is only for kids, parents do not get from this program.
Also you should really thank them, this took a ton of effort to get started and now since no other yeshiva seems to do it, they are currently providing meals for about a thousand kids, and more will sign up when the open the link again tonight.

Correct on it being for kids, but they're not sending individually packaged meals. You write how many kids, and they send it all together - and in abundance based on the first pickup this week. So for example, there was a tin of baked ziti, which is supposed to be 1 lunch for 4 kids. But it's way more than my 4 kids can eat.

And absolutely, this is a huge help for the community. There are certainly families for which this is a lifeline. And even for those that financially don't need it as much, it's a huge convenience at a time when things are difficult managing everything in a house full of kids. It means less trips out to the stores for parents. The pickup system appears to be relatively safe and efficient. As far as it being offered to more than just BYQ - they are the provider/caterer for school lunch for several schools, which is why I believe they started off with some other schools included in the program right off the bat. But that doesn't take anything away from what a big deal, and big effort the whole program is. Kudos to Simcha Noble.

Most large to mid-sized Chassidish schools are providing breakfast and lunch daily. Things like bread, spreads, cereal, and milk (one in particular started out with gefilte fish, blintzes, etc but I can imagine the feedback they got. They quickly changed to basics).
The one I know best has prepackaged boxes ready. Each box is meant for 4 kids, so if you're picking up for 6-8 kids you get 2 boxes. Since bread and cereal are packaged as is, you end up getting a lot more food than 4 kids could possibly eat.
When you first get in line you provide your phone number, which is preprogrammed in their system with how many kids you can pick up for. You receive a receipt which you present when you reach the pickup station, and based on that you get a box or two (or three).

BYQ seems to be different.

AFAIK all local schools are providing free meals to families. Breakfast and Lunch. Some offer daily pickup, some 2-3 times a week.  I haven't heard of any local school providing Shabbos food.

On a side note, I don't think it will be enough to save LY, but this is definitely a major revenue boost.

How could anyone be disappointed? In order to be disappointed, one needs to have expectations. What would you expect from Borenstein?

They are accustomed to getting meals off the ground, but at this time when no-one's flying, I guess nothing is getting off the ground.  ;)

That being said, does anyone have some pull so we can get the DOE to switch to Hermolis, La Casa, or even Weiss (or whatever they renamed themselves) or Masbia.

A little off topic but I just have to...

Can someone explain me how Borenstein is so powerful?  They serve awful food on planes and serve almost the entire NY aviation market. How is that?   Now, when business slowed down for them because people are not flying, they managed to squeeze their dirty head in here!  I mean, forget about Hermolis but even Hamasbia in Israel is way better than Borenstein.

So while serving these gross rubbery omelets they manage to continue having the airline business for years, and now when they city is looking for a caterer, guess who they found? The same caterer who serves expired food on planes!

How is it that no competition has pushed them out of busness?

Help me understand. NYC wants to spend as little as possible per meal, yet they supposedly want to provide "healthy" meals/choices. Eating healthy is incompatible with low budget. The cheapest food is junk food.

Title: KSML- covid-19 kosher meals
Post by: elimmm on May 21, 2020, 04:04:22 PM
Here's a place to post pics and descriptions of the free kosher food that's being offered for families w kids under 18. Its important so people know which pickup locations are worthwhile, the days, hours, wait-times (car or no car), and requirements (must be enrolled or not)
Please post neighborhood first, then all other details!

I don't think this is a good idea on such an open forum.
Private whatsapp groups can limit the customer base.  Here it's too public.  A school giving good food will be inundated with starngers and run out of food for their families and neighbors.

its a good idea since the schools get paid per meal that they give out
its a win-win
however, the places that actually give good food, deserve to have a lot of ppl come, whereas the ones who give u $2 worth of stuff are not worthwhile and they are a waste of time

basically, the better the food, the more ppl should come!! more ppl come= school makes more meals= more profit for school

It became a business.
all the schools now advertise.

Went to the city's one, (public school) but to a "non kosher" location, wanted to see what it was different from the "kosher" location,  they had a menu of different options to choose from, "turkey sandwich" "this type of sandwich" "chummus and chips" etc...  I asked the lady for to Hummus and chips lunches, so she gave me two lunches and two breakfast, all the items were kosher but some were "OU-D/non cholov Yisroel, except vegetables which I threw out

The question is if mosdos will be interested in distributing them, p EBT wouldn't be bad.

I was buying milk in the grocery store the other day and the lady in front of me on line asked me if I'm from another planet.
