Title: urgent help needed with Windows Movie Maker corrupted file
Post by: Luvtotravel on June 24, 2020, 09:23:01 PM
i asked on here which program to use for a video montage and was told to use windows movie maker. i downloaded the program from minitool and invested upwards of 18 hours on it since. i saved it a couple times throughout. now when i tried to save it i get error messages that there are corrupted files and it cannot save. when i try to reopen its hit or miss, and the last version it reverted to is hours ago. my question here is whether this can still be fully recovered or i should cut my losses and start over in another program. any help would be appreciated.

I've never had a problem. Did you export to a different file type or you're still working on movie maker?

Maybe it's referring to the underlying files that are in the movie? Did you move or change those?

Do you have a screenshot of the error message?

Congrats on the 18hrs spent! Video editing requires hours of work for minutes of content.
(Look up how long it took to make Madagascar)

Let's try to troubleshoot:

Question numbero Uno: Did you change any of the source files?

To be clear: the original clips which you want to paste together - have you renamed/moved/deleted any of them?

Question 2- where were the files stored

Were the source files on your computers hard drive or a removable flash drive or disc? What about the movie maker files?

this is a montage collected from dozens of sources from family members.... theres no way for me to know where everything is from. i contacted a technician who was bh able to retrieve my file and remove the corrupted files. tx all for your replies but simply had no chance to check back since need it for this motzei and still have 20+ hours of editing ahead....

In general best practice with things like this is to put all of your source files (video/photo/images) into one folder (it can be divided into subfolders). This way files are less likely to go missing and it's easier to back everything up / switch computers if need be.

Oh okay great!
In that case the answer to
Were the source files on your computers hard drive or a removable flash drive or disc? What about the movie maker files?
is that they are from one folder on your computer

Make sure they are on the Hard Drive inside your computer. If they are on anything USB if it falls out they get corrupted.

Also make sure not to rename or move any of the source files at all.

With programs like adobe premiere you really need extra space on your computer for all the temporary files it produces. Movie maker also does but less so.

If your computer is full you could also have trouble rendering as a video.

how come no one suggested premiere?

Your original request:

im planning a video montage for a 50th anniversary celebration. which program would be most user friendly with professional results? i heard good things about iMovie but i dont have a Mac. any suggestions appreciated. i would also appreciate input as to songs that would go well for the soundtrack, something family minded. like ill be using the chorus from "someday", "memories" from mbd, "vezakeinu"...but need some lighter family themed songs as well....

Primary reasons:

1) You asked for something comparative to iMovie.
2) you asked for user friendly with pro results.  Not a pro program. Premier has a tough learning curve.
3)premier is not the best for you needs: I assumed you were incorporating pictures which are nice with a pan and zoom effect which movie maker can do automatically. Premiere would be hours of keyframe-ing (tedious) Not the most efficient way and movie maker would look nicer.
4) you would be back here trying to figure out the render page.
5) its expensive. $30/month and takes technical knowledge to get it for cheaper

Bottom line. I think it will look nicer with Movie maker.

literally have no words as to the reactions of the audience. was all at once uplifting joyous heartwrenching and empowering. but doing such a project is certainly not for the faint hearted. ended up showing it sunday since i was still working on it all thru friday and motzei. i believe the reason for the constant corruption was a) working off a usb, b) very long file c) moved around some music files after placing them in movie maker. i ended up dividing the movie in 14 parts before exporting them and playing them on loop through an app

Now merge the files, put it onto USBs or DVDs, and distribute it to the family for viewing in the coming years. You can have it done for you (in Lakewood) for less than $3 per USB.

Upload it online (private video / direct link on YouTube or other streaming service) so you have it saved for posterity and is easily accessible by anyone you want.
Can also host it on google drive as a shared link so others can download it directly to their computers / devices as wanted.

Free and don’t have to worry about it getting lost or scratched “can you make me another copy”.

Indeed. However, there is more implied value (and privacy) when family members get a physical drive than a simple link. But a link is cheaper and easier.
