Why is this thread in Just Shmooze?  Is this not a live trip report?  @Suave has done a few of these LIVE reports a while back IIRC.

There's 5 of us. I slept in the connected motel for Shabbos and tonight we're driving through the night. Supposedly there are 6 beds, but I have yet to see them all.

We extended the RV awning over the little hut with a table to act as an eruv between the RV and the hut.

Cabover, converted table, flattened couch, rear bed, 2 bunks.  When I heard about this trip, I was wondering who was going to take the bunks.  Not exactly sized for adult men.  The bunks probably convert into additional seating, but that may be just as worthless.

Dan, very proud of you and happy that you were finally convinced to go out and see the real America the Beautiful.
Having taken my family on many road trips over the past several summers, some in RV (many thanks to @whYME for introducing me to that world and for his and @Something Fishy 's amazing help several summers ago in navigating them then as a newbie to the national parks and a motorhome), there's simply nothing in the world like it!

As I learnt back then, all those shmancy Starwood points were worthless in these areas. That's when I learned not to be part of the sheeple who just hoard the points that are constantly blogged about, and instead learned to not keep all my eggs in one basket. That in these areas the best points to have on hand were the ones rarely blogged about. But that was relevant for either the Shabbos hotel stops or for when I went without an RV in the unfortunate situations which I couldn't find a deal (i.e. most of the time :( ) . B"H even this summer at the height of the RV season, we still managed to snag a deal. Without a deal the costs are simply prohibitive.

Best of luck, don't freeze, and enjoy the נפלאות הבורא!

shmancy Starwood points

IMHO IHG is the best for the road, meaning, they offer the most savings and availability + Candlewood and Staybridge beat the Marriott versions.

Agree 100%! Though Choice, Wyndham, and Best Western (in that order IMHO), can be useful as well.
Important to keep in mind, that on a road-trip more often than not one is booking last minute, so one can't rely on there always being availability in any one chain. And on an average summer night many of these places near NP's do fill up fast.

Hence the beauty of an RV :) .

So how do you go about getting a deal for an RV? I think I looked into it until I realized hotels are cheaper.

I had a friend that did it, takes a lot of time for upkeep and driving takes x2 as long...

If one has a large family and/or ample time it might be worth it.

AYLOR (if you didn't already), but from the picture I saw the awning did nothing but the opening between the hut combined with the way the hut is constructed was enough even without the awning.

Arches, Dead Horse, and Bryce blew me away. Incredible.
Zion was nice, but so touristy.

Parked in Zion now for dinner.

Now we're in a real pickle. Was supposed to go to Mono Lake and Yosemite, but the road from Mono Lake to Yosemite is closed.

Backup plan was the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, which also closed today.

Sorry, just seeing this now, don't know if it's too late to still be helpful. Adduming your end goal is SF, options would be:

Goblin Valley (SF will love this) + adjacent slot canyon
Valley of Fire SP + Hoover Dam + Great Basin
Mono Lake toofas + Bodie ghost town (SF will love it!)
Redwoods NP  (go find tallest tree in the world Hyperion = absolutelyepic, though not RV friendly) + Lake Tahoe or Lassen NP
Pinnacles NP
Kings Canyon and Sequoia (but check roads if high passes are snowed in)
Bonneville Salt Flats
Capitol Reef NP
California coast

Hatzlacha! Feel free to call/text/WA for tips on any of the above

Goblin Valley and Capitol Reef were snowed in.
Mono Lake was the plan, but Tioga Pass to Yosemite is snowed in, so that's a 7 hour detour required.
Sequoia doesn't seem RV friendly.

In Vegas now, may do Death Valley and Yosemite, though also with a detour due to Tioga.

I believe Kings Canyon not being RV friendly, but double-check Sequoia, which I don't recall presenting the same issues. They're adjacent and usually done together, but the massive trees of Sequoia are amazing and worthwhile in their own right. The Congress Trail is a must!

A. If you're comparing everyday RV rental prices vs. car and hotel, it's not even a question - hotels are indeed cheaper.
Not only the costs involved in the actual rental, but gas consumption is insane (IME 6-7 MPG!).

B. Generally speaking, most deals are last minute, you can't plan far in advance if you want a deal.
Upkeep is really not a big deal if you're renting, once you get the hang of it.

No doubt driving takes longer, but not x2! E.g. if everyone else is going 80 and you're going 70, that wouldn't be x2.
IMHO it has nothing to do with how large the group is (going with a large family may actually prove impractical for an RV, unless you get those real mega sizes that some of the biggest rental companies don't even have in their fleet). In fact, I believe it's the perfect thing for a couple. The experience it provides is really unforgettable.

I tried it for a night, not looking forward to it again.

It takes 2x to drive...., sorry 1.5. Rural county roads can easily handle 90 while an RV is pulling 65 or so, then goes the start and stop....

Obviously its up to each persons liking.

I'm not trying to convince you, but it's not really about "trying it for a night". I don't think anyone would like it if they just took it for a test drive for a night. I mean it's not the biggest joy to drive on the highway while everyone is cruising right by you and you have your pedal to the metal. Never mind that the whole RV at times feels so shaky you're hoping it doesn't fall apart, lol. It's not a fun vehicle to drive in any sense of the word, and it can be a real headache when driving through real city.

The real joy is for folks who know what road-trips are like, the pain in finding and driving to a hotel every night, packing in and packing out etc, especially with kids.

I completely agree, it's not for everybody.

IMO Zion NP is one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in the US.
It's interesting. I agree somewhat but IMHO it differs from other known parks in a certain sense.

A. Unlike famous attractions e.g. the Grand Canyon or Bryce Canyon that no matter which viewpoint you go to, you'll be awed (perhaps some points are better than others, or better sunrise/sunset etc., but even at the worst viewpoints, you're still wowed to some extent -if you haven't yet been exposed to the better lookouts). You can drive in for an hour, never have looked at any guidebook or map, or gotten any tips from anyone, go to a lookout and just be blown away.

Zion is different. There's no one central attraction (technically the valley is). You can go spend a few hours in the park and come out saying it was lame. Unlike the aforementioned NP's, by Zion it's really about knowing beforehand where to go. Even asking rangers you'll get so many different opinions what you should see (IME).

B. Another difference is, to really see Zion you must hike. It doesn't have to be one as scary as Angel's Landing, but without hiking even a short hike to see the valley, don't bother going to the park IMHO. And I say this as someone who avoids hikes at every possibility (blame it on the kids).
But like I said above, key is to know which hikes to go on, as some may be really not that exciting.

C. Roads outside the park are nicer than what you may see inside the park (if you don't hike). The road leading to the park is incredibly gorgeous.

How do you drive the behemoth on winding mountain roads? Or do you have to meticulously plan a route to avoid them?
Not a big deal. It fits on most roads besides for some known exceptions which don't allow RV's. But generally speaking you don't have to make any special adjustments to your route.

Disclaimer: I've only driven RV's in the summer, winter is a whole different ballgame. Though that applies to all vehicles and roads in NP's as a whole.

I mean it's not the biggest joy to drive on the highway while everyone is cruising right by you and you have your pedal to the metal.... The real joy is for folks who know what road-trips are like, the pain in finding and driving to a hotel every night, packing in and packing out etc, especially with kids.

+1000. As a driver you aren't going to love driving an RV. But you will love the fact that there is no fighting in the backseat. No more "are we there yet?" No more pit stops every 60 miles to use the bathroom or to eat lunch or to stretch your legs. It's true that you're not going to drive 90 MPH but since you also rarely need to stop (except for gas) it probably balances out in the end.

On our RV trips my kids have played board games, cards (on a real table), put their feet up on the couch, draw and color while DW prepares meals and snacks all while going 60 down the highway. Try doing that in your Pacifica.

The 2 most iconic hikes in Zion are the Narrows (though check water temp and water level to see if it's safe or even open) and Angel's Landing (not for those with any fear of heights).

Unsafe to hike the Narrows at the moment.

Had to look it up... Angel's landing is pretty insane...

One of the best hikes in the US. Takes better part of a day for most people.

I might be able to share my IG stories without you needing IG. Does this (https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/18114867049120431/) link work?

It's from an earlier trip, this trip will be added by tomorrow.

Booooo. So annoying.

Why not make an IG account just to follow trips like mine? You can hide the app and set it to just alert you when I post (or something like that).

Thanks. Those will have to wait for a different trip. Looking for shorter, less intense hikes. Time is limited for us on this trip. Any suggestions?

Should probably take this to the appropriate thread, but here's from the NPS site.  There are others in other parts of the park.

@Itttc  Zion NP: It seems like one has to order tickets for the shuttle bus (and limited stops.) I would start with either the Watchman Trail from the parking lot or Canyon Overlook Trail off the Zion-Mt. Carmel Hwy (IMO one of the nicest drives in the US.) Then take the shuttle and get off at Zion Lodge (5) and hike the Middle Emerald Pools Trail and continue to Upper Pools. Then head to Temple of Sinawava (9) and hike the Riverside Walk.

As always check the NPS website (https://www.nps.gov/zion/learn/news/upload/Oct-InfoSheet-Final-web.pdf) for updates.
And AllTrails (https://www.alltrails.com/parks/us/utah/zion-national-park?ref=header) is a great way to do research on hikes.

(For me,) It's not about the filter per say, but the reason behind a filter, namely, a Geder. Similarly, "I don't do social media" is a geder, even when it's for a kosher account. Of course, you are not mechuyav to accommodate my chumrah,  although it would be appreciated.

I never thought of it as social media, so even if it really is, it has NOT broken my Geder.

It's not.
The ills of social media are where you can wind up and what you will see, despite not even trying to see it.
Besides, forums like these were around long before social media was a phrase.

Just seeing this thread now and I thought I should share some of my experience from our recent road trip in Aug 2020.

I traveled a few times in the past few years to the Western US with different groups as part of my work, and I always had a dream to do an RV trip there with my family. thanks to Covid-19 I had the opportunity to make this dream a reailty.

We started our trip in Denver where we picked up our RV, and from there we started a 21 days road trip to Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and our last stop - California.

10 days with the RV (2020 model, 28 foot, which we paid $60 a day with no other fees, as part of the one way special) and the rest of the trip with a rental car.

It took me many days to create our itinerary and b"h the trip was just perfect in every aspect.

You can view our full itinerary with videos and photos via my Instagram stories in the links below:

This trip was an experience of a lifetime and we are looking to do it again iy"h next year.
