Any ideas or input on what to look for would greatly appreciated.

I looked into this market several years ago, and made a concious decision not to get into this market. For anyone that travels around the world, I believe Plan F of the standardized Medicare supplement plans is the way to go. Coverage will be identical across carriers, so it's a matter of price and service.
For part D, I didn't do that much studying. If one takes prescription medicine, one should check the formulary of various offerings. Otherwise I plead the 5th on this.
I do think a combined Life/LTC policy makes sense for anyone with assets and/or forced income. But that's a totally different discussion.

I have my federal plan that costs around 625/mo. Trying to figure out if it would be better to drop that.

Don't forget to calculate in that you probably can go to many more doctors than a normal Medicare plan with your federal plan (if it's anything like my state one), and also may have additional coverages that a normal plan doesn't have. I remember my grandparents waiting months to get into a practice with theirs as apposed to mine where I can go into half the doctors in America.

Are you talking about regular Medicare with a Medicare supplement, or are you talking about Medicare Advantage? There's a huge difference!

With supplement. Have no idea what advantage is.
