Title: Kosher In Dubai And Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Post by: Cbs on November 30, 2020, 08:30:37 PM
Anyone want to start a master list of hotels that can provide kosher food?

I'm going this week IY"H and i will try and get as much info for an updated trip report and tips

See below a list i've received. I don't yet know what the "Kosher-ready" means but hopefully this will be somewhat helpful

The kosher restaurant is in the Armani hotel (Burj Khalifa)

There is a Kosher program by Aryeh Wagner at the Habtoor Palace from Dec 20 to Jan 7 http://starguest.com/kosher-hotel-in-dubai/

A bit OT but Israel is likely to redefine UAE as Red, mandating a quarantine period for anybody who returns from there, which may slow some things down

I would imagine fear of Iranian sponsored Terrorism is playing a part in this

The menu and pricing seems to be much better if ordering directly from the caterer.
Question is getting stuff up

FTFE!!!

Chabad does not give kosher certification in the name of Chabad.

Rabbi Duchman, who happens to be a Chabad Rabbi in the UAE gives his own certification.

Please do not imply that Chabad gives kosher certification.

Spending December in Dubai and decided to do the same I did in Cyprus for the past month and a half - self-catering. Of course its not the best solution for a family coming on vacation that doesnt want to bother with cooking. Other than grape juice and milk (you can bring 5 bottles of wine in and they also sell here) there is everything you might need in stores like Carrefour Hypermarket. There is a small selection of items carrying OU and such, but what comes very handy is to have the European kosher lists that explain items and details such as factory codes (I rely on Paris and Zurich) as many items are manufactured there. There is kosher chicken available as well. I really dont feel like Im missing anything. Im not sure if cholov Stam milk is available, perhaps some UHT is, but other cholov stam items are readily available as well.

Be careful to make sure the "Chalav Stam" doesn't have any camel milk mixed in.

Right, hence the mention of UHT, I doubt they would import fresh milk.

I would assume they sell locally produced camel milk. They do sell milk chocolate made with camel milk.

Worth noting - Should make reservations early as they fill up apparently. They do 2 seatings,  1@ 630pm and 1@9pm - if you sit at 7 or 730pm you need to give up your table at 9pm for next set of seating - This is what they told me but will hopefully verify that next week once there

Im not sure that were talking about the same thing. Im saying that there are many cholov stam imported products that I saw when looking for non-dairy items. I am not suggesting buying local products.

the master thread (https://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=26243.msg2372239.msg#2372239) and reiterating here as well that at the moment kosher is not so simple and the caterers and restaurants are overwhelmed and can't handle the volume. Many people are stuck without kosher as they didn't plan well.

The Armani needs week or 2 advance booking and they only have 2 seatings 630pm and 9pm

If you reserved 630, they don't give away your table until 9. Ive seen them turn away people while tables sat empty for 2 hours since people didn't show up or came late

Treat kosher is horrible food and there are many issues in terms of delivery as well

Eli's won't take orders they're too busy

There is another guy that claims to be doing food but wouldn't answer his whatsapp message so I can't comment much there

Its unorganized and many people are upset and going hungry

Sure one won't have restaurant meals if they didn't plan ahead, but there are plenty of products to not go hungry. While one can't rely on familiar products and assume they are kosher even if the logo isn't there (many companies have different factories for different markets markets), there are other options. For people not looking to cook and just looking to have basic food for a few days, kosher certified bagels and wraps can be found at Carrefour HYPERmarkets. Kosher smoked salmon like Labeyrie (only unflavored), mayonnaise (OU) or canned items like sardines (OU) are also available. Almond and soy milk, as well as dairy options from imported yogurts to cheese are available. Nestle cereals made in France (some dairy) are everywhere. In the snacking division, you can find ice cream, sorbet, KIND bars etc. all with the OU.
From what I've noticed, smaller stores like Spinney's or Carrefour markets have very small selections which can be discouraging, but one can find everything by going to one or two Carrefour hypermarket.
If one is willing/can cook, the possibilities are endless.

Here's a link to the KLBD, sadly they don't precise where each product is made, so you'd only be able to buy what is made in the UK since the company might have multiple factories: https://www.kosher.org.uk/koshersearch
The Paris Beis Din list is a little more helpful as they add factory codes and locations when needed, although they don't include some products that KLBD does, but it's in French only: https://www.consistoire.org/telechargements/

While I can't compile a comprehensive list of products, I'd be happy to answer any questions.

I can ask. But my guess is that they will charge the food accordingly. I.e. they would pass through the markup they earn on the room, imho

tl;dr no kosher meals yet.
I actually emailed them a couple weeks ago, got an (imho) impressively detailed response:
Quote
In reference to your inquiry on Kosher meals, though we do not have a particular menu we are in the process of establishing some connection and food delivery plan with some approved Kosher food suppliers here in Dubai (Quite a number of Kosher guests already use these). Below is our current meal plan for these particular preferences since we have had the pleasure to host many guests with kosher meals requirements.

BREAKFAST:
Guest are welcome in the kitchen to light the gas burner fire (if need be), some will ask to crack eggs by themselves too. We will cook eggs and serve with freshly peeled and cut vegetables & fruits (using brand new pans, knives and chopping boards kept specially kept for kosher food). Some guest  will bring their own breads, yogurts and cheese due to specific requirements. (A  waiver has to be signed for this if own pre-packed food is brought in as per hotel  policy). Food can be served in glass or disposable plates,  take away containers or regular in-house crockery depending on ones preference.

LUNCH:
In most cases guest will go with our regular menu and order Vegan or fish selection without dairy. (If again pre-packed food is your preference then we can reheat and serve)

DINNER:
Our Vegan Menu options that suitable can be offered or guests can use their own packed food if they bring with them ( usually non veg selection, stored and reheated by us). Dinner can then be served with fruits and Vegetable prepared by us as per afore-mentioned kosher protocols.

For all meals we will serve cold and hot beverages. As mentioned above also, All meals are served with  either disposable crockery and cutlery if there is strict adherence to the Kosher meal practice or glass crockery kept specifically for Kosher.

Unfortunately we dont have in-house bread, meat or dairy selection dedicated to kosher.

You can always reach out to our Executive Chef or myself for further consultations and guidance if need be, for we are at your service. Hope this gives you an idea what our limited capabilities are. Thank you.

Should you need any further assistance please dont hesitate to contact us.

For the general Israeli public, kosher on vacation means taking the vegetarian option.
