Title: google voice help
Post by: sunny on December 14, 2011, 10:29:59 AM
I downloaded the app for Google.voice on my phone (sprint HTC EVO) and it has this annoying feature that once you press talk then it says to answer press one... Does anyone know how I can get rid of it??

I actually like that feature. It gives me the 3 seconds I need before talking to someone. I use this line my business line.

Unless you want your messages to go to your cellphone's voicemail, then keep the screenig on. I also like to have it so I know if the person calling called my cell or GV.

I believe that in that case, if you don't answer then it forwards to Google voice. Where have you been receiving your voicemails as of late. Do they appear on you GV account?

Take that back, the way it is setup outgoing texts need to be sent from the site or an app to show up as coming from GV. (probably to avoid confusion as it would look like you sent it to a different number - whatever, its complicated; it probably could be done I don't know why they don't /end rant)

By the way, I don't have call screening on, and my GV voicemail picks up my calls (forwards to cell and office at the same time).

It worked fine for over a year, and recently my cell phone VM was picking up too fast.  I called VZW tech support -- and they lengthened the delay that it takes for the VZW VM to pick up, so that it always gets picked up by GV.  Unless you call my cell directly, in which case VZW VM picks up.

Why not just change your VZW VM number to GV?

Why not just change your VZW VM number to GV?

BC I have two GV accounts, and my cell phone number is listed as an office phone on both GV lines -- landlines can be shared across two GV accounts, but cell phones can't.  One of my GV lines is a local area code, the other in another state where my company is located

I've been unable to place any calls on my phone, using Google Voice.
Every time I try to place a call I get a message "we could not complete your call, please try again!"

Anyone knows what may be causing this?

I tried "force stop," didn't help.

I thought maybe the problem is with my phone, so I made the call from Google.com/Voice on my PC, and it also didn't go through.

Anyone encounter this before?   Any solutions?

So it is not a GV problem, it is a internet / ports problem.  I may have missed it upthread, but how are you using your GV?

Via the official GV app.

How can it be an internet problem, if it's not limited to one single WiFi connection?

I misread your OP.  I did not realize you are using an app.  This is an obvious step, but did you try removing and reinstalling the app?

What decides if its long distance is actually the first 6 digits, so in lakewood not every 732 number will be local.

they claim to reload numbers periodically. Alternatively you can port out a local # if you already have one then get a new one to replace (but make sure verizon won't throw on new fees to activate...) , or if you don't have a local # yet open one up with verizon and then port out, but watch out for fees ....
- btw i thought the changes to gv should have no effect on using it this way, just for those using it strictly thru their internet

I am not in front of a computer, but something like this...go to google.com/voice, click in settings, click on the tab that says phone, or forwarding.  From there you can add a phone.

log into your google account and go to www.google.com/voice. There will be very clear instructions there how to proceed.

If you have an android phone, you can set the GV app to automatically redirect your outgoing calls thru your GV #. The pain is, your call log has funny numbers.

Does anyone know if there's a way to use an existing Canadian cell number as a google voice number?

There are a few rare area codes that Google voice thinks are Canadian, aside from that I don't think so. I don't remember the exact name but there is a Canadian company that has a similar product, free Canada phone or something like that.

To my knowledge, there isn't really anything out there for free. But if you have Golan or Cellcom you can get an international number, and have it forwarded to that.

I use google voice to call Canada for free from my cell phone. I set it up for someone else, but it's working a little differently.

When I call, I'm prompted from my PIN, then have the option to make a call. When they call, they get their recorded voicemail message. Only if they press the * once or twice before the message ends does it take them to the point I get as soon as I call...seems like it's not recognizing that their calling from their own number and want to login; instead their treating them like they someone else calling in.

Anyone know how to change that?

In settings you can set where you want to be routed when calling your gv number from your own phone. Set it to menu/place a call. (I don't remember what they call it but you'll see it in the description.)

Pressed for time.   Quick answers? (I'm getting lost in GIYF.)

Goal: To use GV as my outgoing phone number sometimes.

1.  Do I need to download a special app on my mobile?
2.  Is there a different way than the 20 second delay of GV calling you back to place the call?

I'm having Hangout problems. Some contacts that have history texts to different numbers (for different countries) and sent by me from different numbers (from different countries) have been getting this error...
After a few back and forths of deleting the app, reinstalling it, unlinking Hangouts from the voice app and re linking and merging conversations it then works for a couple days. And if I don't merge conversation btw, it creates a new conversation for every time I switch (the sending or receiving) numbers within a contact.
I know, I know, just stick to WhatsApp.

Try setting up one as Home, and the other as Work (not Mobile) calls should work, but text could only go to email. Or you should be able to have two numbers on one account for around $30. Or on a smart phone you could have two different apps with Google Voice.

Get a new number on an existing account for $10, the old one will stay on the account for 90 days, but you can "make permanent" your  number for a one-time fee of $20. So that calls or texts that are sent to the old number will still come through. But when you call or text someone from the old number, your new primary number will come up on the caller ID. This may be a plus or a minus, depending on how you look at it. I did it way back, so I'm not sure if this still works, but it should.

If the number is listed on the account as a mobile phone, and the option to recieve texts is checked, then you'll recieve texts. The message won't be coming from the senders phone number, only Google will create a new one, so if you reply to the number from which the message came from, then it will be sent through GV. I'm not exactly sure about starting a new conversation though.

Impretty sure the only way to start a conversation would be through the website  and when they respond you gave a number to send to.

You can start calls by dialing into your gv number they should have an option to start a call but you will need to know the numbe. You won't be a b able to use your phone book

the easiest way to have conversation using your google voice number is, ask the other end to send you a text massage to your gv number, you will then get a new number  which you can call or text to that person and will show up your gv number

Title: Re: google voice help
Post by: sguitarist18 on July 05, 2016, 02:32:05 PM
No, don't think so...because when it didn't work with one GV account, I tried with another, and then it gave me a new message, informing me that I was switching it over from another account (which it hadn't said before).

Which also means, to me at least, that it accepted the linking of the phone to the account, the only issue was issuing the number. Google's forums seem to list a similar issue, saying that there's no workaround...but I wonder what the root cause of the problem is, and if there is anything I can do about it.

You only need access to set it up, or if sometimes if there's an issue in the future (rarely).

Is there any other plan that doesn't require a $10 load

Any dealer can do it but it never look good (for the dealer) to do a port without putting on a plan. Most companies pay a small fee to the big ones (the big 4) so its not realy fair to do such a thing

No because the switch happened in 5 min.
A port from mobile company to mobile company should not take more than 1-2 min (ever).
If it takes longer there is something wrong with
1. the porting company
2. the info
3. the previous company not releasing

Yes,
Fwd the cell phone to the GV #.
For Verizon dial on cellphone *7thenareacodeandphonenumber (like that, don't dial *7 and then dial phone #)

We don't want the cell phone to forward to GV, since the GV number is rarely used and we want to be able to change whose cell phone it forwards to.

It's ridiculous that you can't show more than 10 results per page.
Get someone to write a quick script for you to automate it.

If text notifications come in like regular texts, that would be great.

Supposedly, picture texts will work normally, which is also a big improvement.

The other improvement I would like to see (I don't know if it has to do with the app) would be to have the voicemails coming from a call to the Google Voice # go only to the GV mailbox, and the voicemails coming from calls made to the cell # go to the cell's voicemail.

Unless this is already doable and I'm missing something?

The other improvement I would like to see (I don't know if it has to do with the app) would be to have the voicemails coming from a call to the Google Voice # go only to the GV mailbox, and the voicemails coming from calls made to the cell # go to the cell's voicemail.

Unless this is already doable and I'm missing something?
Pretty sure that's how it's set up by me...

from which phone do you try to remove the google voice VM? Basic phone or smart phone? for smart phone, when you install google voice it asks you if you want to configure you Carrier VM to Google Voice, you can skip it, but you can still change that by going in the phone app settings, choose yuor VM service provider, change that from GV to your carrier.
from basic phone you can remove the call FWD (this is how it works with VZW)

I'm using an Android (Moto G4).

I'm not trying to remove GV voicemail; what I would like is for calls made to the GV # to never go to my carrier's voicemail.

I'm on Sprint.

Has anyone had any success in using an mp3 for the Google Voice greeting? I used to be able to do this in Windows with a program that would reroute the sound that would come out of the speakers as a virtual microphone and have Google Voice call my hangouts number to record the greeting, but now they got rid of using the hangouts number to record greetings.
Any suggestions?

It deff could be that long... but call them and try to convince them to do it for you on the spot (they need to call verizon landline to get the number released)... if they claim they can't huca...

Well if you choose in GV settings, that it should display your GV number as the caller ID for incoming calls, you might be able to set a different ringer in your home phone book settings

I went into the gmail that I thought was linked to the cell and indeed, the GV number appears linked to the gmail account, but no forwarding cell number appears other than the GV number.

Even if a number is claimed, when you connect a new google voice number to it it'll disconnect the other google voice number.

call your google voice number through gmail website in the side bar from there you have the call placed directly on your computer and can use the program to play in the mp3 recording for your voicemail greeting.

The front door callbox for my building requires me to program my apt buzzer to a local area code. Being that we only have cellphones in my house, we've been using my cell phone to answer the callbox, setting up a GV number with a local area code and forwarded the GV number to my cellphone and thats how i would be able to answer my front door. This has worked quite nicely for the past 3 years. Two weeks ago it just stopped working. I tried called the GV number directly from a diff phone (my personal cell phone should ring) but after a few rings it just goes straight to voicemail.

Does anybody know whats going on? Was the GV number somehow disconnected? Please help. Thanks!!

I had the same issue, contacted Obi support, and they responded:
Hi,

There is a temporary service issue with Google Voice at this time, affecting certain Google Voice users with the OBi.  The issue is being worked on and please wait for Google to resolve this issue.  In the meantime, you don't have to do anything to your obitalk configuration.

Thank you, - OBi Support

I actually rebooted the router afterwards and it started working again - maybe try that

You might have to call T-Mobile and have them unlock the number so it could be ported.

When porting out, all you need is your T-Mobile account pin, and then provide it to your new cell phone provider, and they port the number for you.

Spoofcard is extremely overpriced. One can easily setup FreePBX, get a sip trunk, and change their caller id, and make calls for a penny a minute.

Maybe try verification thru a voice call. You'll need to dial in 2 digits they'll provide you. You need to do it on their older site.

Spoofcard is extremely overpriced. One can easily setup FreePBX, get a sip trunk, and change their caller id, and make calls for a penny a minute.
That's a bit complicated for the average user. It's much easier to just make a new GV account.

In the slide out menu on the left, there's an option for the legacy site.

Trying to set up a new google voice account... I put in a phone number to verify, typed in the code, and for some reason verification did not complete. Now I'm trying again and it won't take that phone number :(.

Any advice?

Try in legacy mode.

It did not work, i chose a phone number from the list they offered me and it gave me an error. It didn't even let me put in my phone # to verify.

I'm missing two important features in the new Google Voice android app
1) Mark as unread
2) option to turn off the roaming guard

If you feel the same kindly submit the feedback form

@etech0e its probably because you used a number that was used already too much times to activate Google voice numbers
no way really to fix this best way is just to open a new account
did find on goodle a way to override it just Google it.

What's the best method to ALWAYS display GV# when placing outgoing calls on iphone ?
Title: Re: google voice help
Post by: Avii on September 26, 2017, 01:52:46 PM
If you are using Sprint you can have them link your sprint phone number to your google voice number instead. All your outgoing calls would go thru GV and you will recieve incoming calls from both numbers. same applies to text msgs.
You can set this up on your GV account.
I heard Tmobile and verizon have a similar feature but i'm not sure how it works.

This looks like a third party app you would have to use to dial out. What i'm using is directly linked to my phone number and is set up on your official GV account settings.

1. GV not letting me forward messages to linked numbers

Figured out that GV was saving the numbers as Home numbers, hence the reason it didn't allow me to forward messages. Legacy site gave me the option to choose, which worked just fine

How can you return to your call once you went ahead and slid away all your open apps, seems that when you in middle of a call and you by accident slid away the tabs for all apps in use, and the google hangouts app, but Google hangouts app still works to continue the call even after sliding the open apps away, and should you want to go back to the call screen from your previous call there's seems to be no way, all I see is the dial pad for one who wants to make a phn call, but here im already on the phone call with someone and now wanting to pull up the old call?
And tips on how to pull up the old screen of your call? Or even a way to end the call without having the end button after swiping away all your apps?

What youíre describing works perfectly fine on my iPhone. When in middle of a call, thereís a little ribbon at the top of the screen that gets you back to the in-call menu, regardless of force-closing any apps.

I tried everything possible to end the call doesn't seem to work whatever I do. I was actually just on a call with Chase Bank and had slid all my apps away while I was on the phone and never had a chance to hang up assuming the chase rep would hang up for me but two minutes later I hear talking from my phone I put it near my ear and I hear the representative talking about her supper she was eating last night and how much you paid for it and how it tasted trying to record the conversation but I couldn't find the recorder on my device.
would really love to know how to end a call on Google hangouts.
Meaning after I slide away all the open apps.

it allows me to make another phone call. Don't know if It will actually go through since I'm on a phone call, will pull me back to the dialing pad and stay on the phone call.
Try putting in Airplane mode
for that price I could just turn off  my phone or just try to make a phone call for my actual device.

When choosing a google voice number, all the input you get is to give them a city or area code. I remember in the past being able to give them a sequence of digits, and they would try to find a number that included those digits. Any idea if there's a way to do that still?

assuming she's paying to make domestic and international calls?
Unless she's calling from a u.s. number to another u.s number?
Make sure that the Google Voice number is attached correctly and it's verified sometimes has to be Reverifeid for it to work and be able to make outgoing calls.
Or try deleting the app and reinstalling it, also in the settings make sure it's set that you allow Google Hangouts to make phone calls.

 Good luck.

Assuming it worked in the past?
If you still can't get it to work just download hangouts(hangouts dialer) and connect the two by logging into the same email, as you would be able to place out going calls hopefully.
Just remember to add the +1 to which ever number your calling if it's abroad to another US number.

It did work in the past. And I've done a bunch of research online and all I can guess is that the update ruined things for a lot of people and they just never fixed it.

The issue with Hangouts (and CMIIW) is that it makes the calls over wifi/data where as GV makes the calls using the service provider. And I prefer it that way. She is currently using Skype for international calls but it too makes calls over the internet and isn't always great.

They still require a forwarding phone number.
But you don't need to ave it actively forwarding to that number.

Which ever way you get a gv number you will need to activate it at least once by using another number.

you can port a number in from, use that number to verify then have it ported to GV without a forwarding number.

Under settings there's an option calls and then an option incoming calls, deselect the option to ring on your device.

Go to Google voice's website go to legacy view (accessible from the menu) then go to settings (top right corner).

In the calls tab there is an option to set incoming caller ID as your Google voice number. (The problem with that is all calls will just show your Google number.)

I'm not sure if it's a glitch or it's just not possible to be done, basically every time I make a call and add a second person to the call there's no way to hang up from one of them alone the only way is to either have the person on the other line to hang up or to hang up from both of them and call back the second person.

For example if I call bank or something alike where they don't hang up they wait for you to hang up that means I have to hang up from both people I'm on the phone with and have to call him back yes it's not such a big deal but It'll be so much easier if I could just hang up from one, any ideas?

Works fine here, make sure your notifications are set to on/allowed in settings of hangouts app,  and volume is on if you want it to ring, as well as your app is up to date, and if needed to have a verification code sent to re-verify your number( it seems with the new update they took away that cranky ennoying step to keep your numbers active).
Lastly you can try clear cache ,the data on the app.
And last but not least make sure people are really calling you.

You can play around with your phone yourself and use this free site to call yourself and see when you get it to work, good luck.

There's an ongoing bug/glitch which took some features away, which used to allow you to verify your number, which would allow you to set up on an account which had no Google voice number yet a number for outbound caller ID.
Temporary fix would be to download an older version of GV using an apk file.

On my google voice account, I am able to call my number from my connected phone, enter my PIN and make a call. The advantage of this over using the hangouts app is that it doesn't use data which can be quite spotty in certain areas. I am trying to help a friend who recently set up his google voice account do the same but can't seem to figure it out. When he calls his GV number he is NOT prompted to enter his PIN, rather he's asked to say his name (just like when someone else calls his number). Any clue?

You can get it done in the settings by switching back to the old settings interface (which is, thankfully, still possible...)

Any ideas on what can be done for someone in Canada that wants to use a google voice number?
Yes to make calls he can use a GV number but how can you set the GV to forward all calls to the Canadian number ? (And to forward all calls to a US number while abroad your going to pay x amount per forward unless theres a Canadian number i can use for the original GV number?)
While I never tested it yet if I can use my outbound caller ID as the Canadian number which i will try and see of that works.

This is a bit of a jumble, but dollars to donuts GV wont connect to or verify a Canadian number. You would have to verify with an american number and use the apps while in Canada. Canadians calling it wll see this as an international call

Just noticed somewhere in my inbox..

Dear Google Voice user,
On Monday, September 17th, we accidentally turned off text message (SMS/MMS) forwarding for a small subset of Google Voice users. We believe you may have had SMS forwarding enabled to at least one phone number. This means that any messages that were sent to your Google Voice phone number after September 16th may not have been sent to your forwarding number(s). However, all of these messages remain in your Google Voice inbox. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Recommended actions
Please check your Google Voice inbox to ensure that you have not missed any messages since September 16th.
Consider re-enabling text message forwarding to forward messages sent to your Google Voice number.
Sincerely,
The Google Voice team

I think you can transfer your existing gv number to another account that doesn't have any number yet. Then you can request a new number on your main account.

No need for the person to be in your contacts, its all free to call anyone who has an american number who's in Israel, Canada or anywhere in the world and can you call whomever when you have GV downloaded which would allow you to be able to call who ever you want from where ever in the world to any US or Canadian number.

Yes you need to download hangouts dialer and google voice. A total of three apps, sounds crazy but worthwhile, doesnt take up much space, keep only the hangouts dialer to make calls and texts. Meaning the other two apps you don't have to make an icon on the home screen.

And then when you managed to figure out how all this works you can use a feature called outbound caller ID which allows you to use your American phone number which you have in the US to make outgoing calls meanwhile people thinking you're back in the US calling them it's great so people know who you are instead of using a Google Voice number.
While with that you might need a little help as they made an update for the app which took away that feature, which requires you to download an APK file of an older version of the Hangouts app version 24 and then redownload Hangouts dialer which would allow you to verify your number, I can walk you through the steps later after you get your regular Hangouts working.
You would use something like apkmirror.com to download that but don't worry about that for now.

It sounds complicated but once you get everything up and running it's very easy.

That's correct not always will you be able to dial from your contacts if the contact does not have a plus one and then the phone number it will not work even if it's in your contacts so you have to make sure that every contact has a plus one before the 10-digit phone number.

If you do a quick Google search how to place a call from Hangouts while abroad it will tell you you need to place plus then one before the phone number you're looking to dial out of the u.s.

Oh yah, I get a raise in my salary once I reach 1k likes. Keep them coming.

+1 but likes are always better ;)
Lol..
 +1 indeed. Not +2 ;)

So it seems like on ios just gv and hangouts are enough. I can call and text. It shows up on caller id as my google voice number
So it seems your ready for the next step, which allows you to use your american phone number you had back in the states on your google voice account? (or unless you don't have a US number active while in israel?)

I try to always bring my T-mobile phone, as I would need it for verification codes or random stuff. A spare phone should I need, and my regular american number so I would verify it on GV and have that number as my outbound caller ID. And would ring when someone called me on it, meaning it would ring on my GV phone number as I set up call forwarding to ring on my Google voice number allowing me to receive all my calls.
With T-mobile I had no problems setting up call forwarding while in IL and with sprint I would have CS set it up for me should I have forgotten to set it up before hand.

Any more Q feel free to ask. And ping my name should you want to direct the Q to me.

Also being that you have a iphone some details might not work the exact same. But I would assume all would or should.
Good night folks. Or good morning for those in the holy land.

I live here, so i don't mind my number showing up as either my google voice or my israeli number. Although, technically, before i left for israel i ported my number to Tello so i can keep my number for a low price. In the tello app i can place outgoing calls from my US number, and it deducts from my balance. (3Ę a min). I am still looking for a way to forward incoming calls to my GV number, but Tello doesn't seem to have that option.

Correct. They don't offer that feature. Which is fine most of the time because ppl that know me know I'm in israel so they don't call my us number

Was going to tell you about freedom pop, but there a bunch of ganavim. Stay away from them.
They charge you top ups and new policy of no refunds.
Put a stop for all charges from freedom pop on my cc.
(I tried to get a new sim for an old plan I had but they decided to give me a new plan not just a new sim.) anyways if I can think of something will keep you posted.

They are not ganuvim, just somewhat deceptive, and hard to  maneuver. And it's quite understandable from their perspective, they give you something free and their benefit is that they can push you into choosing something premium for pay. True they're overdoing it, but the promise is understandable.

For companies like this it is a no-brainer to use a virtual credit card with a limit, I've been using https://privacy.com/

That's a good idea should they have a need to charge you and should they need to, IINM they will pause your account till they bill what they want! Or might be easier to remove what they want to bill before they bill.

And I did receive a few credits and refunds. But frustrating to have charges for something I never really used. Even though I have it as a backup phone plan.
Just a word of caution out there with them. (make sure your ontop of your account and know whats going on, and then all is fine.)

Not familiar with Google fi, though I did sign up for the $200 free credits, never activated the plan.

When you guys refer to hangouts dialer is that the only app you have or all three apps? (GV, Hangouts, hangouts dialer.)

One should have nothing to do with each other.
The hangouts is an app not a service. So shouldn't be causing another not to work. Must be some settings not set correctly.
If you can give me some more details about what's not working and which apps you currently have downloaded in regards to the Gv/google hangouts.
Only thing is they're both google. And assuming connected to the same google account.

Yes. You can not have GV and FI on the same Google Account, its one or the other, If you ported on a regular cellphone number you may have lost your GV number, but you should act fast you might be able to get it back in another account

Just let him choose a new number. Or use outbound caller ID if he wants to use that number on hangouts dialer.

Or call Google and ask them to transfer credit on hangouts to a 2nd account you own.
    +1 855-836-3987 -Google CS.
 Or email them.

There's supposedly an update which will finally fix the Outbound caller ID, took them a while to fix that problem.

This should be resolved with the latest update to Hangouts.

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Hangouts app .
Tap Menu Settings.
Select your Google Account.
Tap Discoverability Settings.
Follow the prompts to add your number.

Title: Re: google voice help
Post by: myi on March 04, 2019, 10:48:43 AM
What was the issue?
There was an option for outbound Caller ID, which allowed you to register a number and use it to make calls while using your google voice phone.
Meaning if I have an american T-Mobile number 1718-123-4567 now when I go across sea's I want to continue using that number so people can know who's calling and not have to call from my GV number.
There was an option to verify that 718-123-4567 number and have that as the outbound caller ID when making a call and I would receive phone calls as well with this number as I would set up either across sea to forward every call to my GV # and would effectively have my tmobile phone number without paying to port in/out or any shtick.

For those who set this up before it went bad with the update, like myself I had this working every here and there, but another fix was to sideload an APK file of an older version and be able to pull back the features which were removed with the update!

To verify a second gv number you going to need a new number but you could create as many google voice numbers that you like, but again if you want to verify your Google voice number you would need a number that was never used before.

I have 5 Google voice numbers attached to five different email addresses now only on one email address my primary email did I actually verify my number.
It used to ask you to verify your number but lately you're able to add new numbers without verifying it, don't know why you have to verify it serves no purpose.

some days they wanted to verify it and some days they don't ,if you just play around there you should figure it out , I don't remember off hand, you should be able to add the number without verifying it or if I get a minute I can try adding another number to another email address of mine and see how I do it.

just curious how you trying to add a new number using a desktop or using your mobile phone? And on an Android or an iPhone?

did you try to remove your number from your other Google account and then create a new number on your email address with that phone number which is not linked to any account now and then re-verify it to your other account.

or in English you have your regular cell phone number connected to a Google voice account, what you should try to do is delete that number from your Google voice account and now it will be free to create another Google voice account now create a new Google voice account with a new number and use your cell phone to verify this new Google voice account and then afterwards if you want your number to be verified for call forwarding or outbound caller ID on your other number then go back and reverify your number.

I would delete the number myself and try for you but I just don't want to be busy re-verifying and resetting up all different numbers for my accounts that way with your own account feel free to try and see if that works.

Yes free, make sure to forward all calls from the criket wireless to the Google Voice number.

Go into the settings in the hangouts app and click allow incoming phone calls and set the notification type if you like.
As well in the settings of the phone go to the hangouts app and make sure everything is enabled and allowed to be used, if one of the options are not checked and given the right permission then it won't ring on your S7 edge.

Also make sure you have Google Voice, Hangouts dialer, and hangouts installed.

And should you want to make phone calls from Israel to the USA/CANADA you need to hold down the 0 sign to add a + sign before the number, for ex. +1917-123-4455

 Hope it all works.
 Report back if it doesn't.

Are you asking if you can change your Google voice number or if you can have 2 voice numbers linked to one real number?

You are able to change your number but I don't think can have 2 voice numbers linked to one real number.

You can change by transferring out your Google number (setting is in legacy view) to a new account that doesn't have any Google number. Then on 1st account request a new number.

Has anyone in the past send pictures through Hangouts?

I always loved this method of sending pictures through hangouts as I was able to send unlimited amount of pictures at one shot, but what I did realize each time I would send someone pictures they would always complain its blurry.
Never did I send it to my own phone which I should have tried, but being that I did send it now I realize that it is blurry.
Curious if there's a way to sharpen the picture on Hangouts, meaning that Hangouts doesn't reduce the pixels on the picture when its sent.

I wonder if Hangouts to Hangouts will retain its sharpness or that will also blur the pictures?

Wow really surprised to see that they're is 917/347 # to choose from when adding a new line.
Now i see 718
But they didn't always require this which seems to be a new thing.
"To complete setup and start using Google Voice, you need to verify your existing phone number"

New as well, haven't seen this before with a linked number and a gv number, you were able to make calls when you didn't have a number as it went as anonymous.
"Anonymous caller ID
Hide your caller ID on outgoing calls"

Trying to set up a new GV num with a second email of mine. I keep getting an error message. I’m guessing it’s because the phone number connected to my email address is the same number attached to a different email address of mine with GV already. I have to have a new number connected to that email to setup an acct? I seem to remember during the Fi promo ppl say they have a bunch of GV num , how did they do that?
Set up account number one with a valid phone number and then once you get a gv number go to the settings and click un-link the attached number, now it will allow you to use that number and get a 2nd gv number if you don't care to have a linked number.
But as long as your number is linked to another account you wont be able to use it to set up an another account.

Just tried that here and now have a new gv number and that verified number(a real number not attached to gv) i used to create a new account, i de-linked it from my gv account after i got myslef a gv number, so im free to create another gv number with that phone number.

Go into your Google Voice settings and then find the options as you can see in the picture and make sure the settings are exactly what you see in the picture.

Now an Android and iPhone might be a little bit different but see if you see anything alike.

Yes it has to call your phone then you pick up and it connects. Just add your smartphone number as a forwarding number.

On a computer it works only after installing a plug in I believe.

Why are you using the web version? Why not the Google voice /Hangouts app?

Yes I believe so. You just have to download the Hangouts app and the Hangouts dialer (it's a separate app). I haven't had to look at hangouts/Google voice settings and set up for a while since it's been working fine for a while by me, so my memory is rusty. But I'm sure @myi knows all details.

Well said! Hence the reason to why I tell anyone traveling to Israel or another foreign country do not rely on Google Voice as your phone carrier rather buy a cheap phone plan with data and then you can use Google Voice meaning you don't need to buy calling in to USA/CAN.
People learn it the hard way when they think they're going to save a few bucks.
As you can see in my thread about using Google Voice I explain to buy a cheap phone plan when visiting Israel versus relying on your carrier which will be very choppy when making calls from Google Voice as well when you try to call and then does not go through which would require you to call again like a grodnocks problem.

Here's the thread I'm referring to.. I can link it in the wiki as well.
It may not be written the clearest, but definitely has all points that you need to know, and of course if you need help feel free to post back here or mention my name in a post.
It's easier if you post here with your question versus pming me with your question that way everyone could see your question.

Take a quick peek in this thread...
https://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=111383.0

But to answer your question yes as long as you have all three apps downloaded as I explained in the post above your good to go.
For example I'm in Israel and I want to make a call to the US and Canada, as long as I have good data you can make a call for free while using the Google Hangouts app and use any number you like, either a blocked(unknown number), or ur American GV number or your regular American number as I explained in the post above.
But remember when your out of the country to hold the 0 down till you get a plus + sign and your be able to make the call.

Now to give you an example the other way around, I like making calls to Europe as well as Israel all the time, so I paid $10 to Google Voice, meaning I loaded my account with $10 as that's the minimum. and pay two cents a minute to call a phone number in Israel or one to two cents calling depending where in Europe.
Yes that way around you have to pay, but while calling to the US and Canada from any country in the world would be free as long as you have good data!( for example a free international roaming data from T-Mobile will work but will be choppy as ########## , you know what I mean.

So yes Hangouts app can call random numbers in the u.s. and Canada.
But for Europe and other countries in the world you have to pay a few cents, if you go into Google voice settings it will tell you the calling rates to anywhere in the world they are very cheap.
If you just skim through that thread a Linked in my post above you should have all your questions answered.
But again if you have any questions feel free to ask.
If I can be of help I'll gladly try to assist.

Yes I believe so. You just have to download the Hangouts app and the Hangouts dialer (it's a separate app). I haven't had to look at hangouts/Google voice settings and set up for a while since it's been working fine for a while by me, so my memory is rusty. But I'm sure @myi knows all details.

Hope I was pretty clear explaining what has to be done in my post above.
Pretty simple once you get the hang of it.
One of these days I got to get myself an iPhone to play around and see how it works, if it's any different or the same.

And also want to get myself an GV Obi machine for free calls and play around with it.

Does the Google voice number change to a regular mobile number and not VoIP if porting out to a carrier?

Ported out a number from GV for my free sprint plan, worked like a regular phone number.

Thanks. If you look up your phone number now on one of those sites it says the carrier or still says VoIP?

That the original GV number is now a reg ( Verizon for example ) number. However it's still not allowing to attach a new GV to it.

what do you mean by that?
Do you mean the opposite you're trying to use the so-called house number(which was ported from Google Voice) and connect it to your Google Voice account?

I used to have numbe A for GV. Now I ported number A to my cell phone carrier. Now I want number B to be my new GV number and link it to number A (which is now my cell phone number ) to have calls forwarded there..

Which website/service doesn't allow VoIP/Google voice numbers to be used with their services?

Officially WhatsApp doesn't allow, but my number is working fine on there. The same with Uber.

I had an issue using my VoIP on uber and had to make a new account (wouldn't let me log in) so now my uber is a real number. WA is still VoIP and has been for 3 years but was initiated when it was a real #. Others have had issues with WA and VoIP.
I have come across websites which knew it was VoIP and didnt let my number, but I don't remember which websites they were.

I was actually just asking for myself. I ported out my Google number and now it's in limbo. I can make outgoing calls but can't receive incoming (except through Hangouts). I read that Google sends an email when a number is ported out (which I didn't receive yet) so I was just curious if they still do that.

Anyways how did you fix your issue?

It seems like it's working now. I got the email around an hour ago and now everything is running through the carrier. It took a few chat sessions with support but wasn't too bad.

Total port time was like 3 days (with following up with support).

Im having issues connecting to a conference call with Google voice. When entering the conference pin it seems to be doubling each digit that is pressed (the system reads back the input when there's an error).

Can this be caused due to some conference calls not being supported on Google voice?

Make sure you didn't get signed out of your Google account, and if you didn't sign out and then back in.

Doing it on speaker phone? (I just think a possibility of the mic hearing the tone out from the speaker and takes it as another button press.)

Working on purchasing one of those obi's, so I can play around and see how they work.
But don't want to misguide you, so will have to let someone else chime in.
I know GV and Hangouts pretty good, but not with the obi.

Anyone have one of the obi202 for sale or even the obi200? Preferably the 202. Don't care if it's polycom or the regular.

A friend of mine was telling me that he was using one Google voice account with two phones, using the same number for both phone's for conferences for the past few weeks.
He told me that Google shut down his account, was he doing something against the terms and condition?

To be on the safe side I would have told him to use two separate accounts.
Assuming that's the only reason why they would shut him down being that he was using two phones simultaneously?
Obviously if it's for the conferences they can charge if they wanted to, just like they charge for international numbers, don't say that to be a reason why he would get shut down.
I told him to appeal the shut down and see what happens.

I am looking to send out mass texts and come up with the following potential solution.
If you receive a text to your GV number you see an receive it as an email from an address like this {yourGVnumber}.{sender phone number}.{10 random characters}@txt.voice.google.com
If you ask everyone who will be getting the texts to send a text to your GV number, you will then have the ability to email them using the above email and they will get it as text. If you email all those numbers at once it will be a mass text.
Problem is i tried it using a new google account and google voice number and the texts were coming a day later or not at all.
Is this because it was a new google account?
I heard of someone doing this successfully but they were also receiving many incoming texts, so perhaps that was the reason why it wasnt flagged. Before I try using my personal GV number, I want to make sure it works.
Does anyone have any experience in this, or know why the texts were coming a day late or not at all?

I am having an issue which maybe someone else has also had and knows how to fix. With all the phone lines that are necessary now, was using Google Voice for one of my kids to call in to their conference. Also because of increased kids use of the computer, added NetNanny to my existing filters. But it seems that Net Nanny somehow interferes with Google Voice being able to make calls! I know this is so because when I disable the filtering it works fine. I reached out to them and they told me check for red websites in developer mode, but there were none. Tried adding voice.google.com and play.google.com to allowed sites list, didnt help. Any ideas anyone?

New plans are $60 ask them how much to add a line on your plan.

For example I was on the free for a year plan. I wanted my number in google voice so I ported it out but I still wanted the free plan so before I ported I added a line at the same price of free. Effectively keeping my plan open. Cant guarantee it's possible for you.

Quote
Google recently changed the way linked/forwarding telephone numbers are added to a Google Voice configuration.

  • If you add a telephone number via using the mobile Google Voice app, it will classify that number as a mobile number, which can receive forwarded text messages.
  • If you add a phone number via the Google Voice web page user interface (UI) at https://voice.google.com/settings, then it will classify the number as a land line, which cannot receive text messages, so the text forwarding check boxes will be grayed-out.

To correct the phone type of a mobile phone number classified as a land line number, do this:

  • From the new Google Voice web page, click the three vertical dots in the left-side menu bar.  Click "Legacy Google Voice".
  • On the legacy web page, click the gear icon in the upper right corner, then click Settings.
  • On the Settings page, click the Edit button under the number.  On the next page, change the phone type to "mobile", and save your setting.

You will now be able to check the box to forward text messages.
