Title: ZFV Master Thread
Post by: shmooz on April 23, 2012, 06:25:23 PM
Looking for a ticket to TLV on UA in the summer, prices have really gone up. In checking Citi's TY Companion I noticed that it gave me a choice to go by train to EWR on UA. For some dates leaving from the Philly 30th street lops off hundreds from the price of the non-stop flight, to about $1450. Last year it wouldnt be such a find, but this year I think its a good deal. You can enter ZFV as the airport and it gives you the options. (I searched for ZFV in the search box here but nothing came up so assume it hasnt been discussed)

When do you see it knock off so much?

And no it hasn't been discusses here, although I've seen it on FT.

This has been discussed ad nauseum on FT. Bottom line is I wouldn't take the risk on ZFV-EWR-TLV. XXX-EWR-ZFV is another story.

You don't have to board the train.

Opinions vary if you have to print the ticket at an Amtrak Kiosk, but u can do it an Newark airport for sure.

Nobody checks who boards an Amtrak train.

This drops prices on a lot of cities:
Phoenix              reg 322 thru zfv 263
Los Angeles       reg 358 thru zfv 281
Dallas                reg 340 thru zfv 181
Miami                   reg 310 thru zfv 245

Our ticket was from ZFV to NEWARK and from NEWARK to TLV.  We called united before and they told us they are sending 1 day prior the info to Amtrak so we went to penn station 1 night before and they told us they have no info about us, from there we called united and the rep on the phone apologized but from the words we understood they have no clue who actually takes the train so the next day we without a problem checked it at Newark.

Because of the fear, that perhaps UA will cancel the ticket, especially if originates in ZFV, why not hop onto train in Metropark, NJ (the stop b4 EWR), the conductor will scan the ticket and you should be all set. And the other way around as well.
Anyone know if this is feasible?

All the OTA's that I tried didn't recognize it as a valid airport.

Maybe it is due to this,

yes, they upcharged me to what the fare from Newark would have been.  They said they were "nice" not to charge me the $200 change fee.

I couldn't access boarding pass on my phone or from kiosk.  Agent said I was like the fifth person to have this happen (not sure in what period of time).

Just did SAN-EWR-ZFV, skipping ZFV. Two points. I got my Amtrak boarding pass in SAN. Also in big bold letters it said Amtrak check in required. Not sure if it was always like this.

Took an emergency flight  from MSP-EWR-ZFV, checking a bag I was slightly worried they would check it all the way through, but they don't.
I received a piece of paper with various  instructions and one of them said:

1) "Checked bags must be claimed at EWR."

The flight price difference was over $500.00!!!

Anyone? Also, can you take another amtrak same day? Eg., can I fly from ZFV and board at Newark, but return same day to PHL and take an amtrak to EWR?

Did you ever get a response on this? Did you try it?

Thanks!

IIRC you need to print the tickets for the flight not to be canceled.
IINM you can go to Penn Station in NYC 24 hours before the scheduled train departure time to print your ticket.

I happened to discover ZFV while looking for tickets from CLE to EWR this coming up Tues. CLE-EWR-ZFV saved me around 500 on 3 tickets. Best hidden city ever as we are checking luggage! As I am not starting there but rather ending I don't see much risk here.

Any recent success stories? FT indicated that you HAVE to print out your Amtrak BP for your ticket not to be canceled. Mixed reports whether you can get the BP elsewhere and get it scanned.

My inlaws recently flew ZFV - TLV and they actually went to ZFV for the outbound, and they said that it was actually required as United has or may ask for proof of travel (I believe they said that because Amtrak now works with e-tickets, they can now see everything in the computer)

If zfw is the last leg of the entire itenarary, you can just skip it. your luggage should be with everyone else's by baggage claim.

One more question: for the reverse (ZFV-EWR-LAX), if I'm successful at printing the Amtrak ticket at NY Penn Station, is it correct that at that point I will not need to actually board the ZFV-EWR leg?

I will be in Manhattan and would rather just take the train straight from Penn Station, rather than traveling to Philly to board the ZFV-EWR portion.

Which train, ZFV-EWR or NY Penn-EWR?
ZFV-EWR which makes a stop in Penn station.

I never traveled this route, I'm just assuming it's one train and there's a possibility you might get stuck.

ZFV-EWR does not stop in NY penn station. Maybe you're thinking or Newark Penn Station, which is the stop after EWR.

Found the answer in FT. For anyone wondering, chances are high they will cancel connecting segment, unless connection time is short enough that they may not catch it in time.
Looks like I'll be heading to Philly.

If I make a ZFV ticket, can I board any train to Newark, of will my ticket be for a specific train only?

(Can I take an earlier train? Not really questioning if my flight will be cancelled, but am asking if Amtrak will allow me to board a different train.)

ALSO:
Can you make ZFV tickets on Priceline. It doesn't seem to like ZFV as an origin point.

Took the train @ ZFV. Nobody asked to see the train ticket at EWR. But didnt check luggage, and went straight to the gate.
Also, if you use the automated kiosk to get your ticket, you need a CC in your name to begin the process.

Looking to book a RT, but saver only available from EWR at convenient time and return only to PHL at convenient time. Was thinking of doing ZFV-EWR-IAH-PHL but I can't see ZFV when searching award travel.
