Title: The New Color-Coded Fuel Surcharges On Award Tickets Master Thread!
Post by: Dan on January 17, 2010, 03:29:20 PM
I hate paying huge BS fees on free tickets.  These fees can be as high as $300, $400, or even $800 on a ticket!
Avoid accumulating miles on airlines that charge these fees and hopefully they'll see the errors of the their ways...
Just recently, South African and SAS has ditched their fuel surcharges on award tickets, hopefully more will follow!  It's just a poor way to reward loyalty and is a dishonest business practice.

If anyone would like to volunteer to help categorize more airlines that would be great!

Not BA.
Which ones specifically? Does BMI and LH charge a fuel surcharge on CO award tickets?

I dont really care what you call them. If tickets have more often then not $300+ charges, its called fuel surcharge by me, even if it isn't.

Of course, I just wanted to confirm that they do have those charges on tickets when traveling on CO.
Title: Fuel surcharges and taxes

Hey guys,
First off, thanks Dan for that amazing chart on the main site regarding fees etc.; its really GREAT!!

What about the other (outside U.S.) carriers most common to the forums users?
does anyone know about:
BA (i know taxes in England are crazy high, but what about non-England flights?)
LAN
ANA?

I don't mind doing the grunt work, but if people know offhand, why use that time? right?
Thanks

BA's booking/fuel fees to Israel from the states?
ANA's?
LAN's fees within North America?

BA to tlv has a stop in LHR- coach is about $500+ for fees and Biz is about $700+

ANA passes on the fees of the carrier you fly on so if you fly CO or US it is only about $50 if you fly with LH or LX it can be a few hundred.
There are extensive discussions on award fees elsewhere in the DD forums.

I know...I was more looking to centralize it.
And if noone posts in a few days, I will start sifting through to do it myself, but if someone knows offhand, then GREAT!!!

Am I correct in assuming that the above chart is only for fuel charges and that there are additional taxes?

Taxes should be the same from airline to airline and are mandatory.  Fuel Surcharges are the difference between the airlines.

ANA site will only show you the fees if there are enough points in the account for the ticket you are trying to book. Even then they wont always show the fees as they sometimes need to check with the airlines.
Over the phone they will sometimes give you an amount or an aproximate.

I've completely redone the original post to include every airline out there.
If you're able to help categorize any more airlines that would be awesome!
And if you catch any mistakes please point them out as well!

Very nicely done!

When I used Qantas miles for LGA-YYZ flying AA they only charged me around $50 which I'm pretty sure was only for tax.

Btw, how can one tell if the charge on the award ticket is only the tax (which has to be paid on every ticket) or if it is also a fuel surcharge?

you could always check the actual paid price of the ticket...they break it down for you.
Using your example, go on AA and check how much they tack on for a paid ticket.

I did that but it says taxes/fees $xx.
So if the charges on the award ticket are the same as the paid ticket, does that mean
that they only charge the tax on the award ticket or is there fuel surcharges on both the paid and award ticket?

On a price breakdown you can see a code YQ which stands for fuel surcharge.

$50 for LGA-YYZ sounds about right for just taxes.  You can always compare the tax to what the exact amount charged on AA.com for the same award ticket would be and see if there is a fuel surcharge.

Have you used Qantas miles to book a BA or Cathay Pacfic ticket? It seems like they don't charge a fuel surcharge for AA, so we just need to know if they charge a fuel surcharge on the airlines that normally charge a fuel surcharge themselves.

Ill do a dummy booking and see what it comes up with.

Using Qantas miles to fly HKG-LHR on BA the taxes/fees are HKD$2343=$USD300.
It doesn't give me a difference between taxes and fees even in the breakdown, so I'm not sure if its only taxes or also fuel surcharge.

Booked a ticket today using CO miles. EWR-LHR stopover a day LHR-ZRH-TLV returning TLV-FRA-EWR. (tried finding Swiss but not a single business seat ZRH-JFK on any date, today until end of availability (330 days), 10 points anyone that can find a seat.)
Anyway, the tax came out to $265. I thought it was quite high being CO doesn't charge fuel surcharges. The rep said that more than half was for a tax flying out of London in business. Anyone had this before?

Yup flights into the UK in J or F have a ~$150 or so "premium seat fee".

There are talks of getting rid of it, I say avoid LHR until they do, espcially just for a 1 day stopover.  I think if you just connect there and ditch the stopover you won't pay the fee, but I'm not 100% positive.
You couldn't find a single J seat from ZRH-JFK ever??? That's weird.  What about to BOS or ORD? Or via Canada?

LHR-JFK-LHR on AA in coach is $126.40.
Seems like
-QF adds a fuel surcharge on their own metal
-QF adds a fuel surcharge on partners that normally charge a fuel surcharge when flying on their own metal
-QF does not add a fuel surcharge on partners that normally do not charge a fuel surcharge when flying on their own metal.

Sound right? Any other examples that would refute that?

Lucky is reporting that ANA doesn't charge a fuel surcharge when flying on Virgin Atlantic, which makes it an incredible value for redeeming on Virgin Upper Class.
Of course this would place ANA in an entirely new category, namely the "charges a fuel surcharge whenever they feel like it with no rhyme or reason" category.

Can someone with ANA miles please confirm if they really don't charge a fuel surcharge for redeeming on Virgin Atlantic?
If they really don't I wonder what other airlines they do/don't charge for?

I tried booking online but VS only comes up as "RQ" on ANA and the total before submitting the request is 63K miles but fees are not shown.
If I get a chance I will try to call them up and see if they can tell me over the phone.

Definitely the best value out of ANA miles, especially the way people talk about Upper Class...
But, you'll only get as LHR as ANA doesn't allow mixing partners...

OK, I just got off the phone with ANA and I had to make a booking in order to get all the info. (They do a courtesy 3 day hold on the booking before ticketing if you have the points in the account and let it expire if you dont call to confirm it- anyone named "Mike Oracle" want to buy the ticket off of me for October trip to London  ;D ;D ;D .)
The taxes/fees came out to $194.60 which is exactly (to the penny) what CO would charge for booking on Virgin Atlantic for the exact flights I checked.
Additional note; The availability I found via CO.com was available when I spoke to ANA.

When you were trying to get to TLV did you try booking on AC via ANA? Was there a fuel surcharge?

No problem.
When I booked to TLV I did not try AC because I found direct on CO and US. If you can find me an available AC itinerary I can give it a shot to see if they will show the fees online.

AIRLINE SURCHARGE (INSURANCE/ FUEL)  USD373.40

Ouch!
So for ANA we have
CO, UA, US, VS: No fuel surcharge.
AC, LH, LX, NH:  Fuel surcharge.
Anything else that you know of to add to that list?
Any pattern at all? Maybe no fuel surcharge on non-star partners?

When you get chance can you try these out? They all should have availability.
JFK-GRU, 09/30-10/04. (JJ)
WAW-TLV, 02/28-03/06. (LO)
ATH-TLV, 03/01-03/04. (A3)
VIE-TLV, 03/01-03/04. (OS)
BCN-TLV, 03/01-03/06 (JK)
BRU-TLV, 03/01-03/06 (SN)
IST-TLV, 03/01-03/06 (TK)

It doesnt seem like you can check airlines like Jet Airways (tried JFK-BRU) or Etuhad (tried JFK-AUH) on the ANA site.

JFK-GRU $162.20
WAW-TLV $182.29
ATH-TLV $156.99
VIE-TLV $140.99
BCN-TLV $174.69
BRU-TLV $216.89
IST-TLV $113.99

Adria Airways (JP) there is a fuel surcharge. (Actually didn't know that they fly to Israel...although probably wouldn't try it.)

Thanks Aussie, you have ANA miles as well?

CO charges $56 for JFK-GRU, $42 for WAW-TLV and $76 for ATH-TLV, so ANA is adding some surcharge onto those tickets.

The weird thing is I thought that TAM (JJ) wasn't charging a fuel surcharge on their own award tickets.
Apparently there's really no rhyme or reason for ANA's surcharges!

When you get chance can you try these out? They all should have availability.
JFK-GRU, 09/30-10/04. (JJ)
WAW-TLV, 02/28-03/06. (LO)
ATH-TLV, 03/01-03/04. (A3)
VIE-TLV, 03/01-03/04. (OS)
BCN-TLV, 03/01-03/06 (JK)
BRU-TLV, 03/01-03/06 (SN)
IST-TLV, 03/01-03/06 (TK)

It doesnt seem like you can check airlines like Jet Airways (tried JFK-BRU) or Etuhad (tried JFK-AUH) on the ANA site.
Here are the last 4 options on your list
VIE-TLV, 03/01-03/04. (OS)- USD140.99
BCN-TLV, 03/01-03/06 (JK)- USD174.69
BRU-TLV, 03/01-03/06 (SN)- USD216.89
IST-TLV, 03/01-03/06 (TK)- USD113.99

(I just realized Aussie already updated his post with the full list...)

Can't check OS or TK on CO, but BCN is $35 and BRU is $53.
So looks like those all have fuel surcharges.

How about CPH-OSL on 03/16-03/22 on SK?
It's $43 booked via CO and SK doesn't have their own fuel surcharge.

USD99.60
According to the fare breakdown there is;
AIRLINE SURCHARGE (INSURANCE/ FUEL)-USD55.80
(which is the difference in cost between CO and ANA- which shouldnt be there if SK doesnt charge on their own)

The interesting thing is that the 4 airlines we've found so far that don't have the surcharge (CO,UA,US,VS) all come up with "unable to calculate taxes/fees".
All the others come up with the price and there is a fuel surcharge.

I thought I remembered for either CO, US or both that when i was researching my TLV itin they showed the fees. I might be wrong though. Keep in mind they never show fees if you dont have enough miles in the account for the itin you are looking up.

I guess we need a new category for ANA as it seems like those are the only 4 which have no fuel surcharge for now.
That leaves just Qantas in the category of only charging for airlines that normally charge a fuel surcharge.
Do they really belong there or are they too "pick and choose" like ANA?

You saw VS and I just checked US, PHL-TLV. UA, LAX-MEL. CO, EWR-LHR and all of them just showed the stars where the $ amount is supposed to be and at the bottom it said, unable to calculate fees.

Im a bit late but its not as simple as I thought it would be. Officially all the airlines listed here (http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/help-frequent-flyer/global/en) are supposed to be able to be booked online.
So far Ive only been able to pull up routes on AA, AY (Finnair), BA, CX (Cathay Pacific), EI (Aer Lingus) and IB (Iberia). Most of the others just say "couln't find requested itinerary".
The other annoying thing is unlike ANA you can't only search within one airline and therefore it spits out flights that Im not looking for e.g. I want to find a SA flight, JNB-ZRH gives me the IB flights and to the other locations SA fly it wont show anything.
Thirdly, I dont have another OW carrier to compare the rates and Qantas.com doesnt breakdown the charges. I think that I can safely assume that $200+ charges means that there is a fuel surcharge, right?

So, as already noted for AA there is no surcharge. AY, BA, CX and IB all do have a surcharge.
EI came up with a £57.20 charge for DUB (Dublin)-ORD. Can we safely presume that is no surcharge?

Nice work Aussie!
I think we can safely say that the £57.20 charge for DUB-ORD means that they don't charge a fuel surcharge on Air Lingus.

After Air Lingus left OneWorld I didn't realize they were still partners with Qantas.

The LAN charge is slightly more suspect, can you check a more simple LAN routing (YYZ-JFK or JFK-SCL) and see what that is?

BUE is just the general term for all BA airports, like NYC.

So it looks like QF is properly categorized, as the only airline that charges a fuel surcharge only when partner airlines also charge on.

Did anyone here use ANA to book on Air Canada? Was wondering if there is a fuel surcharge. And if there is, can I avoid the surcharges by booking a connection with only one leg being AC. Sorry if I wasn't thorough enough in glancing through this topic. (I am trying to do 10/17 PHL-YYZ return 10/20 YYZ-EWR or LGA. I am using a workaround [mentioned on DD forums] to check *A flights. Since I have no points in my ANA account they don't show me how much the taxes would be)

ANA: Charges a fuel surcharge for their own and for partner flights except for when flying on select partners.
Note: ANA charges a surcharge on most partners, but does not charge a fuel surcharge for redemption on Continental, USAirways, United, and Virgin Atlantic.
The less legs you have on a fuel-surcharge partner, the less the fuel surcharge will be.

More date points on using BA miles for partner travel:
MIA-EZE on AA online: $61
MIA-EZE on AA phone: $475
MIA-EZE on LAN online/phone: $61

There were no fuel surcharges for using BA miles on AA on the phone or online for LGA-YYZ or LGA-CLE.

So I have no idea when they do or don't charge for AA.  It all seems very haphazard for now.  I would burn BA miles while you can without a fuel surcharge.

BA for now falls into the "Teal" category along with ANA.

Dan,
You posted that CX has a fuel surcharge even online, can you elaborate on what route and what charge you found?
My BA accounts are all died out now so I can test that myself.

I booked a o/w HKG-JFK in Biz last week online and was charged $99 which doesnt sound much more than usual.

Super, have you experienced that as well?

The fuel surcharge for AA appears to be even higher than the very high fuel surcharge that BA would normally charge for that route.
For MIA-EZE is appears that BA is applying their highest possible surcharge, $205 each way plus tax.

For all other airlines BA is simply adding the fuel surcharge that they normally charge on a paid ticket.
For Cathay Pacific's JFK-HKG route that would be a 133.60 fuel surcharge, plus tax, for a total of $170 using BA miles.  It would be under $40 using AA miles to fly on Cathay Pacific.

For Qantas' LAX-BNE route that would be a 160 fuel surcharge, plus tax, for a total of $280 using BA miles.

It all depends on each airline's charge for each route.

I havent booked a RT in Economy but it does not sound like there are any new fees added for CX. Fees for CX JFK-HKG-JFK in biz have been aprox $150-$200 for the last few months even before the latest changes.

I've never had any BA miles, but new or not new, they're definitely adding the fuel surcharge now to nearly all partner airlines.
You can view the fuel surcharge under the YQ or YR line on ITA.

Still have no idea how they calculate the insane AA surcharge.

I boycott airlines that play games and charge fuel surcharges (aka co-pays) on miles.

As I've posted before, once an airline charges a surcharge for travel on their own metal, it's only a flick of a switch to start charging on partners.   Which is the reason I have no Aeroplan miles.

Well your losing out big time. Just 100k for Europe in F, or Asia or Oz in J+2 Stops.  Doesn't get much better than that

I have AMEX points to transfer to Aeroplan should I need them.  I'll use them if I need to, but I won't accumulate and leave miles there like I will for AA, CO, or UA.

I tried using Aeroplan for my May Europe trip and for the current trip.
Both times they shot me down due to going over the MPM so I still haven't used Aeroplan miles yet.
If I go back to Hawaii and they still aren't charging a fuel surcharge for partner travel then I'll probably use Aeroplan.  60K in J vs. 80K with COUA.

So you'll apply at Citi/Chase for 25-35k AA/CO miles, but not 100K BA? Are you saying that in your eyes BA miles are worth less than a third of the value of AA/CO miles?

I'm saying I didn't trust BA and it proved to be true.
They are adding surcharges on all their partners.

No point investing in a currency when you don't trust the issuer.  I also wouldn't make an investment in Mexican Pesos.

I hear your point but I respectfully disagree in this situation. If you would get 25K BA then you have a point because why waste a hard pull when you can get AA/CO... instead. 100K BA is a whole other story, my bonus miles posted a year ago and the fact that they added surcharges now was irrelevant to me since I spent my miles a while ago for AA flights that would have cost over $1000. The accounts with 100K BA were selling for an avg of $1250 for the people who do that.
Even if you would have used them for the cheapest domestic AA flights that would still be $100's value minimum, it takes more work to figure out all those Amazon coupons to get some free diapers....

To each their own I suppose.
I'm not in this game to flip and sell.  See also all of the accounts that BA have shut down b/c of suspicion of selling...

I'll get better use out of having another 30K CO miles in my stockpile that I trust that CO will protect their value than 100K miles that you can wake up one day and find out that they're worthless.

In principle I don't collect and hoard miles in airlines that don't play fairly.
Am I being silly? Perhaps, but I'm entitled to some mishigas.

As I don't check this thread often, I just realized Dan's bump/PING!!!

Concerning BMI, they will always charge a lot, whether its called fuel tax or not.

As in this forum fuel tax seems to be the decisive factor on which miles to use, versus (how many miles needed), and applying the price people pay for those miles you save often much more than the additional fuel charge costs.

Right, but 99% of my miles is via churning, so better to have the kind that doesn't require $$$$

Anyway al613 claims that you don't pay fuel surcharges for redeeming BMI miles on US.
When you get the chance can you check how much tax BMI asks for PHL-TLV on US?

You are right, I should have explained my question better. Wanted to know if BMI charges Taxes on Co. Well I booked a ticket zrh-ewr co, jfk-zrh lx in business. Taxes were 250 Pounds. Quite heavy
In my opinion worth using bmi

I needed 37.5 points. I bought them for 1.5= 562 USD
+210 Pounds Cash                                 = 330 USD
+250 Pounds Taxes                                =395  USD
Total                                                   =1287 USD per Ticket in Business

Even getting AC miles at 1.6 would have costed more, would there have been a better and easier way?

Probably not, except that its better to book 2 one ways with bmi, which will cost you a bit more, but makes the tix more flexible.

How current is this??
British Airways:Charges a fuel surcharge for their own and for partner flights except for when flying on select partners.
Note: BA charges a surcharge for travel on most partners, currently you can avoid the surcharge for travel on AA by booking online.  There is no surcharge for travel on LAN online or over the phone. If the flight is only available over the phone you will be charged a fuel surcharge.

I am trying to book a one way tkt to gateshead using amex miles- i thought I would put it into BA or use on AA to avoid feul charge-  (one way only because I want to make a european stop on the way home and I am not sure from where yet??)

If BA flies the route and has availability it won't give partner options.  Try finding a date without BA avaialbility.

Search online at velocityrewards.com.

For business class you're looking for availability at the 97,xxx (don't remember exact amount) level. Find availability both ways and it'll cost 150,000 skymiles.

Looks like it should be almost $550 in charges for SYD-EZE booked with BA miles.
If you book the trip with AA miles it should be under $150, due to no YQ.

Continental doesn't charge a fuel surcharge.
They do charge a fee for booking an award ticket within 21 days and there's no easy way out of that unless you're elite.

Update on Delta.
They do charge a fuel surcharge on certain partners, V Australia for one.

The foreign origination tax is not a fuel surcharge but rather an extra tax so if you fly a partner which has YQ you'll be charged the foreign origination tax IN ADDITION to the YQ.

(Shame about V Australia, really was the easiest/best value of skypesos...)

did this change or they still don't charge fuel charges on these 4 airlines?

ANA's website won't price it for me till the miles are in it.

As per the OP, UA never charges Fuel Surcharges (otherwise known as YQ). Taxes at some EU airports can be high. LHR is over $200 for arriving and departing

I checked the following routing on Ethiopian.
TLV - SEZ - TLV

Here is the list of extra fees ITA is showing me.
ET YR surcharge (YR)                                                   $280.00
Israeli Departure Tax (IL)                                            $24.07
Seychelles International Passenger Service Fee (DW)   $50.00

From what I can see, YR isn't a fuel surcharge.
Does that mean that this route doesn't have YQ?

EDIT: YR is their YQ.

That's genius although for some reason AC does not allow you to book a revenue ticket that does not have one leg being AC. For example when I try booking BKK-LHR or BKK-BRU nothing shows up. The agent told me the only way to book that is thru YVR!

Thanks! If ITA shows the following I am assuming the YQ for the flight using Aeroplan would be 5655 Baht which is 189 USD? Not to bad.

Fare 1: Carrier TG QHOWTH BKK to LON (rules)
Passenger type ADT, ONE-WAY-ONLY fare, booking code Q
Covers BKK-LHR (Economy)  21,065.00
Thailand Passenger Service Charge (TS)  700.00

Funny thing with Miles & More: no YQ on int'l trips flying on US, but over $700 if you fly on UA. Still cheaper than flying on any miles & more airline (with LOT as an exception).

With SQ, they don't charge YQ on any USA carrier, but M&M decided to have different fees for US and UA.

Actually the funny thing is with SQ.

UA has YQ on paid tickets across the oceans-see ITA to view the amounts.
US does not have YQ on any tickets.
M&M just passes on the YQ on paid tickets.

NH and SQ are the strange cases here.

I'm looking to get to Israel using ANA miles and have found a flight on Swiss air that goes from JFK-ZUR-TLV and back. The cost is 60,000 miles plus $822.07 (!) in fuel/misc. surcharges. My question: is there any way using ANA miles on Swiss to avoid those charges? Do Swiss and United code share for example?

Does ANA charge the same/similar YQ as SQ/AC for partner flights (e.g. LH/TG)?

Is this still true or they changed it recently?

PUTPAC and let us know.
You'd be wise to book the return trip on Open Skies from ORY if possible to avoid the UK APD.
Can I have more info on UK apd? I planned on booking ua/actually tlv-lhr-nyc on ana.  What should I know and how can I avoid it?

Anyone know the taxes+fees for an AA award on CX JFK-YVR round trip? BA is $110. AA.com doesn't show CX awards.

Searched around but couldn't find.

If I had to guess I'd say $50 RT +/- $10.
Though there's also the phone booking fee unless you get lucky and they agree to waive it.

US-Canada routes they don't charge,

I didn't bother checking EK themselves because USA-DXB they charge a nasty amount of miles + YQ. I am actually looking JFK-MXP.

meshugener, great availability, at least on my dates (2 weeks from now)

Also JAL had availability in F where AS didn't.

It seems that JAL doesn't charge YQ if the partner does not charge YQ on revenue fares. So, ITA claims that they don't. Now 100K RT in F with no YQ is a great price. (sounds like it takes 7 days for SPG to transfer :()

Business used to be around 3/400 dollars RT.

Just so you know, you can do ORD-IST for 52K Aeroplan with no YQ.

UA would be 80k, Aeroplan would be 82.5k

My idea would be 52.5 + 17.5 = 70K

Aeroplan has a great award chart to Europe but not to the middle east.

Because United has its own frequent flyer program and do not participate in the M&M program - even though they are in the same alliance as the all(?) M&M airline members.

The Qantas entry is not quite right - they charge fuel surcharge on LAN-operated flights where there is a Qantas codeshare as the award books onto the "Qantas" flight. These are the transpacific flights between Oceania and SA, eg LA800/801 = QF321/322.

Taxes and fuels surcharges one way will spring you about AU$400.

Seems like i got bad info. LH charges YQ on UA even though UA does not charge YQ, per se. Except that I learned that UA does charge YQ its, just wrapped into their Base Fare. i.e. Looking at any flights between TLV-EWR this week on united.com and the base fare in J will be ~$5500 plus $42 in taxes. On Matrix it shows base fare of ~$5100 with YQ of $368. So why does United say they dont collect YQ if they do?

Does flyingblue collect YQ on delta ex tlv (specifically TLV-CDG-JFK). I'm asking because delta's site shows no YQ for that award.

They collect for the AF metal leg for sure.

If CDG-JFK is DL metal then no YQ

Looking to book PHL-BCN on AA metal using UR MR or TY points, what would be the best option, I find that TY to QF would be 60K +just $5.60 is this correct?
and what if I can only use UR or MR, what would be my best option?

Take a look at the options, then cross reference with wiki. Even a noob can do that. After a little time, you don't even need to check the wiki anymore.

I was looking for an award flight on DL with partners (AF, VS) from Europe to the US and there were high YQ ($300+). When I look for a RT with the same return, it becomes only $50 for the ex-Europe flight, which are only the airport taxes as DL doesn't charge YQ. Any explanation?
