Title: United Award Change Fees
Post by: Daniel on May 11, 2012, 01:17:30 PM
Based on the United Award Change Fee below- what will it cost a non-premier to change the Origin City AND the Date AND the Airline (within 21 days)? For example from PHL-TLV to EWR to TLV?
$75 or $150?

Is the 21 day rule based on the current date on the ticket or the new date (or both)?

Thanks. What about the date rule?
Title: Re: United Award Change Fees
Post by: lbvtch on May 13, 2012, 11:26:29 AM
it seems like, with the new rules, anything within 21 days has a fee.

The 21 day fee is based on the date you want to travel, not the date of your existing ticket.
This is to prevent people from circumventing the close-in expedite fee.

Correct.
If you get a rep that wants to charge you just HUCA.
The UA.com language is quite clear:

"Changing the departure to a date/time 21 days away or more: No fee.
Adding, changing or deleting a connection, 21 days or more prior to departure: No fee.
Changing the departure to a date/time less than 21 days away: $75 (unless issued by UA pre-03/03)"

does this work for tickets already in progress for the return  as well?

Yes, same rules.

FT'ers may moan about CO, but they sure easily forget that there used to be no changes after departure on UA awards, MPM, routing rules, starnet blocking, etc...

If tix are booked from Cleveland to TLV, and I would like to add on the free one-way that is possible with UA, would that involve a change fee?
The dates are 4 months out.

Yes. Even changing the flight on the same airline incur the fee. As always, with a stupid enough agent the rules can vary.

If I have an award ticket and for some reason downgrade to coach from biz prior to 30 days is there a penalty to reinstate the difference in miles? Right now I have coach booked and want to upgrade but may need to change it back.

HUCA, ask for a manager.
That must be the only way. They are making me crazy as I am flying from EWR to ASU and then returning MAO to OGG with a 8 month stopover in EWR (!!) and the flight from MAO to EWR connects in PTY then SJU and I want to switch it to PTY- POS - EWR and they are making me nuts. Someone even told me that the ticket is invalid because I cannot go to OGG after EWR and they are doing me a favor and honoring it but that is it no changes.

It is the same airlines.

HUCA, ask for a manager.
My ticket was notated not to allow any changes as it is technically 20,000 miles short of the requirements per ticket, and they therefore did not want to reissue it so I HUCA'd about 8 times yesterday and finally got my change. Each call was a good 45 minutes to an hour.

Ok, I'm about to book a United award ticket for departure in less than 21 days.
Can I still use the trick to avoid the $75 close-in fee? Book for a latter time and then change to th correct date?
Does it still work?

All changes are free within 24 hours as well (barring close-in fee if not previously collected). System doesnt realize that automatically but the reps will waive it.

Just worked for me for a last minute ticket. Easy, 1 2 3...
3 hours prior to departure I looked up for 2 saver seats, booked for next month, PUTPAC'd, changed, done. Took around 5-7 minutes.

Just wondering, card was charged just $5, receipt says $5, but under my reservations it says: Service Fee - $300.00
                                                                                                                                                     Additional taxes/fees - $5.00

If yes, I've read here that the callback line will waive fees sometimes, is there a way to call that desk directly?

What's the deadline for canceling a united award ticket (not flying united metal) and get the miles credited back to account?

Questions.  Booked an international award flight before the June policy change.  Just standard A->B->A R/T

a) If I wanted to prepend a domestic C->A (outside of 21 day window), would that cost me $75?
b) If I were to do (a), would my change policy now reflect the new change policy or still be the old one.
c) If I did (a) and flew the C->A leg, but now need to change the dates for A->B->A, is that allowed and will that cost any extra change fees (assuming A->B is over 21 days away)?

I believe the answers are a) $75; b) old; and I'm guessing c) not allowed.

Thanks

So I talked to a couple United agents and they gave me different answers.  However, I hope the following is true:
a) Yes, $75.  Change in origination or destination causes a $75 fee.
b) Itinerary locks into original booking policy.  Regardless of changes to itinerary, it is grandfathered in.
c) Once an itinerary is underway, you can make date changes to the remaining itinerary with no additional fees.  Assuming that the award fare is available.

And now I've called a couple times since to see if I could get consistent answers, and sadly, no.
One lady (from the callback number) adamantly claimed that even on the old policy, any date change to the itinerary regardless of the 21 days would cost $75 (so I hung up on her as quick as I could).
One lady told me that once i change my ticket, I no longer have the old policy's fees.  And also that if I try to change my return flight after already flying the outbound, I will be subject to the same fee as a not yet flown date change. (this was through the standard UNITED1 number).
I also tried the Around the World Alliance desk and their answer was somewhere in between the two above.

Ugh.  Can anyone recommend a good number to call to get the most knowledgeable United reps on this matter and also when the best time to call is?  I'm guessing calling in the wee hours of the night is probably not the right time. =(

Change date to something far out and wait for schedule change.

Wait for UA to change the timing of the flights by a few mins (or more), and then request a free redeposit.

My mother has a flight to LIH that was added on to a flight she took to Israel back in February.   Right now it's also booked for February but is there a limit of how far I can keep changing it out?

TIA

Ok-  I have a ticket I added on to a flight to Israel that began last December and it's set for February.

Does that mean the rule isn't so enforced?

Did the agent just make a mistake? It wasn't originally booked that way. I just called to change it a few months ago.

Great. And if the ticket is booked online that way I shouldn't have any problems at the airport?

Can someone confirm for me about changing dates on United Award Flights?  Are there no fees for changes if they are made within 24 hours of booking the flight? Is that true of  cancellations too? This is for a non-elite member.

Yes, provided that it's not within 7 days of departure (though in practice that is often overlooked as well).

It is within 7 days.  I am actually talking about booking for this motzei shabbas (Sat. nite).  So do I bother to try & avoid the close in booking fee and risk getting hit with change fees too?

Not sure what just happened: I booked an award ticket from EWR-TLV in August and flew business saver (60k) on the way there and economy standard (75k) on the return home. I tacked on a one way flight to LAX scheduled for tonight but got round trip $25 from Delta for next month so I decided to change my reservation. When I changed the flight to EWR-MIA on 4/3 I saw that it would cost $50 to make the change and I would be refunded 40k miles. Then, I did the same thing for my wife's reservation and it only showed a refund of 20k miles. I kept on clicking back and reselecting my flight and then it showed a refund of 60k miles! I quickly finalized the changes and took multiple screenshots/saved the receipts. I just checked my United account and 70k miles were redeposited. I'm still not sure if this was a mistake so should I call and ask for my other 30k or lay low and be happy with what I got?

If you have no status it's gonna cost you. You can try to PUTPAC, maybe Mr. HUCA, and try to get a rep that is gonna redeposit for free.

I booked a RT (in two parts- two OWs) ewr-lax in Biz. One was 25K saver, one was 50K. I already paid the $75 last minute fee on each one. Supposed to leave tonight, but the meeting was changed. I don't yet know the date, but it will be in 1-2 months.
Is is best to cancel and pay the redeposit fee?
Is there a way around the date change fee?
Can I combine the record locators into one RT to save on fees?
Any answers or other suggestions would be REALLY appreciated!

I booked an award ticket on UA and the first leg of my trip had a schedule change and it now arrives after my connecting flight is supposed to take off. The website indicates that I can change that segment with no fee.

Would I be able to cancel my ticket and redeposit for free as well the entire ticket including the return? Did I get lucky that I can now cancel for free? I am not elite btw. Thanks.
