Title: Free Jew"ish" Books For Kids
Post by: good sam on June 15, 2012, 10:58:53 AM
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library allows you to register your kids for a free book every month.  I signed up a long time ago and recently started getting them (the little engine that could, goldilocks and the 3 bears, classics)

I think eligibility is based on locale.
OT but the little engine that could was always my favorite

Yeah I also signed up close to a year ago and started receiving it 3 books ago. Its better for me as a parent than it is for my kid - reading the same books to him over and over gets boring.

There is another organization that does free Jewish books..... http://www.pjlibrary.org/parents-and-families/enrollment.aspx they have locations all over the country so your bound to find a center that is near by.

To enroll find the closest location to you, and go to there information page on the left side mid way thought the page you will see a yellow button that says "Enroll In This Community" hit it and enter your info!

Good luck!

Nice find.

When you sign up, you choose an age group and that determines the books you get.  You can see the list of books for each age group  here (http://www.pjlibrary.org/Books-and-Music.aspx)

You get 2 of the same book

Actually, I don't think that's true. If you sign up 2 children that are the same age you'll get 2 of the same book. But I know that my sister-in-law signed up her now 4 year old a long time ago and now more recently also signed up her 8 month old. The books that she's now getting for the 8 month old are not the same books she got for her 4 year old when the 4 year old was that young.

The only exception is the first book, which is always The Little Engine That Could.

I was basing it off the first book.  I got 2 engines that could. In the second month I only got 1 book.

We actually got The Little Engine That Could last month on Shabbos. We saw it with the rest of the mail in the afternoon, but by mincha time already it was gone. But like I mentioned, my sis-in-law signed both of her children up so she was happy to give us her 2nd copy. This month we got Good Night Gorilla.

Anyway, it's supposed to be age-appropriate, so as long as you signed them up as their actual ages you should get different books.

Maybe someone took it, which is what happened to me. Either way, it's always the first book.

The first month after a child enrolls, he/she receives a copy of the book Dolly Parton first gave to all of the children in her home county, The Little Engine That Could.
This site (http://blackfordcofoundation.org/Supporting/Partners/DollyPartonsImaginationLibrary) also has a list of books that have been given out.

The reading programs offer a free book to kids who read a certain amount.  While its not the same as getting a free book a month without doing anything, it does fit with the title of this thread.

I've been uncomfortable with PJ Library's books for a while. The values most books promote goes directly against what I (and I imagine most frum parents) want my child to learn. The vast majority of books ended up in the garbage, but every now and then a decent book would show up.

Their Chanuka book just arrived, celebrating... intermarriage.

Subscription canceled.

Some are outright trash.
Some have questionable lessons.
Some are plain old boring and not a book I want to keep reading to my kids.
And some are worthwhile.

Either way, defintiely needs to be screened.

Any book needs to be screened before given/read to children.

Last Shabbos my granddaughter came to me with a Yiddish children's book asking me to read it to her (and my daughter also listened attentively). Which while many would consider this book to match their השקפה, I would actually keep it away. To summarize my problem with it, I found it an antithesis to the השקפה brought about in the maamar ביום עשתי עשר יום.

I don't think there's harm in the book, but definitely not something I would read again or recommend to anyone.

I'm no emoji expert, so not sure what you're trying to say.

I honestly think that in today's day and age, it is of utmost importance to instill in our children that we don't expect שכר, and that shouldn't be our motivation.

Shouldn't be any inside stuff. Both you and I have quoted or referenced this maamar quite a few times, and the point must be hammered in over and over!!! There are no guarantees in life, and even with the best chinuch, we need סייעתא דשמיא, and davening. But as far as chinuch goes, I don't think the point could be stressed enough as how we and our kids yiddishkeit should NEVER depend on any שכר.

Was going to post the following in the Women driving thread as a followup to my post about kids chinuch, but I figure I'll just post it here, since we're discussing kids chinuch.

A. No need to have kids in 2018.
B. No need to get books in 2018, all online, kindle etc.
C. Judaism is overrated, no need for it in 2018.
D. No need for free stuff due to Trumps tax plan for 2018 you can pay retail for books.
E. No need to read to kids in 2018, that's what tablet time is for.

When you go to the library, you've gotta screen the books anyway. Here they ship it to you, and you get to keep the ones you like.
